 Namaste Musical Slide Show
Oklahoma City
We just had the pleasure of delivering our last Prayer Chaplain Trainer's workshop of the year at Unity Spiritual Life Center in Oklahoma City.  We and all of our attendees were so richly blessed by this loving and thriving community.

The following link is to a music slide show entitled "Namaste" performed by singer-songwriter Chad K. Slagl.  We received permission to share it and encourage you to share it with your ministry and Prayer Chaplains.

How Big is Your Frying Pan?

A young man was fishing on a pier and observing another fisherman who was catching fish and measuring them with a ruler broken off at 10 inches.  He noticed that the fish that were 10 inches or smaller were thrown into a bucket but the fish that were larger than the man's 10 inch ruler were thrown back into the sea.  The young man observed this pattern for most of the morning until he could no longer contain himself.

Finally, he walked over to the fisherman and said, "Sir, I noticed that all morning you have been keeping the fish that were 10 inches or smaller but throwing back the larger fish - the ones that all the rest of us on this pier are keeping.  What are you doing?"  The man took a deep breath and said "Young man, it's really quite simple.  My frying pan is only 10 inches.  If the fish don't fit in my frying pan I don't keep them."

So, my question to you this month is - How big is your frying pan?  How big is your spiritual container that holds all your dreams, wishes, and desires for even  greater good than you may be experiencing right now.  Are you "throwing back" the really big ones because your container just isn't big enough?

We know that God is good all the time, and we know that life is limitless in potentiality.  However, as life happens we can sometimes hold on to thoughts and feelings of fear, lack, limitation, and uncertainty that have been shaped by our past experiences and can cause us to have trouble accepting the really big ideas that are nudging us to express more of who we are.

Do you have a desire for your life right now that may seem just too big.  Thoughts of being too old, not having enough resources, feeling not worthy, and many others may be getting in your way.  I'd like to share with you a 4-step process that may assist you in moving through these limiting thoughts and feelings to a place of believing in and expressing "the more" that Spirit has in store for you.    "For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance."  (Matthew 25:29)

Step #1 - Paying attention

We begin with self-observation - awareness is the key.  When the idea comes and the negative self chatter follows, observe what is happening.  Notice that the chatter is there.

Step #2 - Denial and Release

Deny or reject the power that the negative self-chatter has over you. We recognize that the feelings are there but we deny that they have any power over the Truth that all things are possible.

Step #3 - Claiming

This is the fun part.  Say yes!  Once I've said "no" to the feelings that would keep me from stepping into my greater good I am ready to say YES!  Affirm the Truth - "I behold unlimited possibilities, and my prosperity grows;"  "I am thrilled with the joy of living;" "I am whole and well."

Step #4 - Gratitude

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This seemingly simple 4-step process has been an important spiritual practice for me and I hope it speaks to you as well.  Spirit nudges us to step in bigger than we sometimes think possible, but the Truth is that we have everything we need within us to experience all of the abundance, joy, love, and peace that we desire.

Our frying pan really is bigger than 10 inches and we don't have to throw away the really big fish for fear they won't fit!

Leadership

Conscious Communication - The Overview

By Jeri Royce

I recently came across a training module for executive leadership about conscious communication which really resonated with me in my role as a leader, Prayer Chaplain, and Prayer Chaplain Trainer.  I'd like to share some of it with you in the hopes that it will not only expand your current beliefs about communication but strengthen your skill set as well.

We live in a very fast paced modern life and we can sometimes operate in a type of "autopilot."  Our minds are often elsewhere:  multitasking, pondering an upcoming meeting, or thinking about the next point instead of listening to the person speaking.  Can you recall times when you were not fully present to others?   Have you ever missed key information in a presentation because your mind wandered?  Have you ever driven your child to school and missed out on the opportunity to connect because your mobile phone rang and became a higher priority?

Conscious communication is about bringing awareness to the way in which we move through the world, show up for others, and ultimately communicate with others.  Conscious communication is fundamentally about awareness, perspective, and choice.

Awareness - Content (words and data) represents only a small percentage of the meaning of communication (less than 10%).  Most meaning is derived from the context (the situation, the circumstances, timing, interpretations, nonverbal cues, etc.) of communication.  Content can be likened to the small tip of an iceberg that is visible, while context can be represented by the vast majority of the iceberg's mass that remains hidden beneath the surface.  While we are usually aware of the content of communication, most of us are unaware of the context.  Conscious communication starts with having a greater awareness about the hidden contextual aspects.  In the Prayer Chaplain Program we learn about heart or empathic listening, which is all about listening for the context rather than just the content.

Perspective - In order to effectively communicate with others, we need the ability to see things from different vantage points.  When we're able to consider things from several perspectives we are able to gain a more accurate picture or assessment of the situation than when we are stuck in a singular vantage point.  Perspective is the key to understanding others and communicating effectively.

Choice - Finally, conscious communication is about choice.  Since many people are unaware of the nuances of communication (the part of the iceberg below the surface or context), they tend to gravitate toward a singular communication style that reflects habitual and unconscious speaking and listening behaviors.  When we increase our awareness and skills by understanding the more subtle dynamics of communication, we can consciously choose the best mode of communication for any given circumstance.  Increasing our awareness gives us more choices and will in turn expand our effectiveness, power and influence as a leader and as a fellow human being.

So, the pathway to conscious communication is to begin by being aware of the dynamics of the content as well as the context of our interactions with others, by knowing that there are multiple perspective in every situation - we never know the whole story - and the understanding of those perspectives will increase our effectiveness.  And ultimately, we will learn how to make choices in how we relate to and communicate with others that will increase our overall effectiveness.

In our December issue of the newsletter, I will share with you some conscious communication principles that will hep us move our communications with others to a deeper and more effective level.  As I become more conscious with others, I become more conscious with myself.

Thank you for sharing the journey with me!

Consider Collaborative Training for 2012

As you consider your training calendar for your Prayer Chaplains for 2012, consider collaborating with another Prayer Chaplain Trainer and a nearby ministry to conduct your foundational training.  Collaborating with another licensed Trainer can deepen and enrich the experience for your Prayer Chaplains and for you.

Here's what you need to conduct and or particpate in a collaborative training:

1.  Each participating ministry must have a Trainer/Leader who has been trained and licensed by Light and Love Ministries with the Prayer Chaplain Manual and Trainer's Guide since October of 2005.

2.  Prayer Chaplains or Prayer Chaplain candidates attending the collaborative training must be affiliated with a participating ministry and have met the qualifications to be or become a Prayer Chaplain with that ministry.

3.  Advance preparation with the training team so that all Trainers from participating ministries have an opportunity to participate in the Training in some way.  This will not only assist you in expanding your skills for training but also assists your Prayer Chaplains in anchoring with you in the Trainer role.
