The Beauty of Summer

I don't know about where you live, but in Arizona we are in the midst of our wonderful summer temperatures!  We transition from beautiful 80 to 90 degree days to over 110 degrees in what seems like a blink of an eye.  And although it is hot, hot, hot we manage to find the fun, beauty and wonder of living in a desert environment - at least we try.  We spend time in our pools, under our water misters, and in our air conditioned homes, restaurants, and shopping malls.  We manage to adapt to the changes in our temperatures.

While summer certainly brings warmer temperature for just about all of us, it also brings a time of adaptation - slowing down, reflection, taking vacation - a time to retreat from the hectic schedule of school, a time to slow down and rest, a time to make plans for the upcoming seasons - a time of creativity and change, a time to be with family and friends.  With an intentional perspective, it can be a time to rejuvenate your physical, emotional, and spiritual self.  Summer just seems to create an ambiance which helps us to take a deep breath and slow down as we find a "new normal" at least for the season.

I have also been acutely aware of the many changes occurring in people's lives and in my own as well and how much like the "new normal"  that we create during the summer is the "new normal" we sometimes need to create when we experience a great deal of change.   In my own life my husband JB as been in the midst of serious health challenges, our ministry is in a constant state of evolution as we attempt to listen to the direction Spirit guides us, and we recently lost our dear pet, Hershey.  I have certainly been dealt a hand of change with which to play.  Change is the one constant in our lives, isn't it?

And yet, finding my equilibrium and balance - my "new normal"  in the midst of changing experiences becomes the gift I receive and requires me to be mindful and attentive to that which doesn't change - God.  Although change can often persuade us to speed up, breathe quickly, and take action, it can also be the time when we need to do exactly the opposite.  As I slow down, breathe deeply and contemplate what my "new normal" may look like in the face of changed circumstances, I feel the fear and resistance fade away.  I am no longer trying to get things back to the way they were but am embracing the present moment.  Living in the present moment becomes the key to finding equilibrium, balance, and peace.

By daily filling my plate with spiritual food from readings, affirming God's presence within, and keeping specific prayer times, I am reminded that in this very moment there is only God.  I stay connected to my prayer partners, my friends, and my family.  I take time out to observe the beauty around me and I take the time I need to heal, replenish, and rejuvenate.

So, dear reader, as you move through life and experience the change that is inevitable for all of us, I invite you to contemplate and embrace your "new normal."  What has change brought to your doorstep and how can you find your way back to equilibrium and balance by being fully present?

The Tension Challenge - Part 2

By Jeri Royce
The Tension Challenge

Last month we talked about the Tension Challenge as presented by John Maxwell in 360 Degree Leadership.  Recognizing the reality of the Tension Challenge is the most important place for us to start for it is through this recognition process that we are able better to support ourselves when stress comes up - because it will.  This month our focus is on how to relieve the Tension Challenge and Maxwell has 5 steps to share with us.

1. Become Comfortable with the Middle - "Comfort is really a function of expectations.  The wider the gap between what you imagine to be and reality, the more disappointed you are likely to be."  It is important to have absolute clarity about what's expected of you and what's normal within your organization.  The more you are in alignment, the more comfortable you will be.

2.  Know What to "Own" and What to Let Go - "Nothing frees a person from tension like clear lines of responsibility."  Leaders will often become gap fillers because ultimately we want things to run smoothly and we want success for the organizations we serve.  However, this "gap filling" can lead to over-extending, getting into situations that are not ours, poor performance, and can really STRESS US OUT.  So, do what I do - ask yourself frequently, "Is this really mind to do."  If it isn't - let it go.

3.  Find Quick Access to Answers when Caught in the Middle - I find having regular meetings with my leader and the people whom I lead allows me to quickly identify the places where I am caught in the middle and to get quick resolution.  Without good communication, this is hard to achieve.  But the more you practice the easier it will be.

4.   Never Violate Your Position or the Trust of the Leader - This most frequently happens when we overstep our bounds or abuse (sometimes unknowingly) the power and trust that has been placed on us.  Always remember that when you are empowered with authority the actions you take are on behalf of those you represent.

5.  Find a Way to Relieve Stress - Although we probably won't ever completely eliminate stress, I believe we can relieve it.  How we relieve it is not a "one size fits all" because we all handle stress in different ways.  Nature of any sort is a natural decompression chamber for me.  So is knitting and spending time with my dog Jake on my lap - both of which usually don't happen very well at the same time.  The point is - you need to find what works for you.  What do you need to include in your daily routine that allows you to breathe deeply, drop your shoulders, feel into your heart space, and let the concerns and stress of the day fade away?

I want to close with a quote from John Maxwell who says "Nobody said becoming a 360-Degree Leader would be easy.  Leading from the middle of an organization is stressful, but so is being the top leader.  And so is being a worker who has no say in how his job should be done.  The key to succeeding is to learn to deal with the tension of whatever position you are in, overcome its obstacles, and make the most of its advantages and opportunities.  If you do that, you can succeed from anywhere in the organization."
