Pray Without Ceasing

What are your plans for the summer?  Do you have intentions to vacation with your family, do more of your favorite hobbies - fishing, boating, knitting, painting, gardening - or as we call it in Arizona take a "Staycation" where you enjoy your home, backyard, or pool.  Perhaps this is your time to read a novel, visit with friends, or stay home and catch up on your rest.

Whatever choices you make this summer, consider also making the choice to consciously be in contact with the presence of God within you and all around you.  In other words, pray without ceasing as Paul said in I Thessalonians 5:16 "Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances."

I recently revisited a little book written by Debra K. Farrington entitled "Unceasing Prayer" which she has written so well.  She quotes from "In the Spirit of Happiness" by the Monks of New Skete:  "The Call to unceasing prayer is not an invitation to divided consciousness; it does not imply that we pay less attention to daily realities or retreat from life's responsibilities.... (It) means being consciously constantly conscious of the presence of God amidst the changing complexion of everyday life."

Debra goes on to say "When we take even the smallest moment to notice the presence of God in the midst of daily life, we are praying.  When we begin to do that often during the day, we are praying without ceasing.  We are, as the Monks of New Skete write, becoming 'consciously constantly conscious of the presence of God.'"

My invitation to you, dear reader, as you answer the phone, use your email, clean up the dishes or the house, talk with your family members,  attend to your daily activities, or engage in your summer plans is that you breathe, drop your attention to your heart, and anchor into the presence of God within you and all around you.  As we become more conscious of this practice we will indeed not only bless ourselves but we will be a blessing to everyone we encounter.

Join me and we will create a collective consciousness of praying without ceasing that is certain to uplift and rejuvenate our communities and our world.

The Tension Challenge - Part I

By Jeri Royce
The Tension Challenge

There have definitely been days during my life as a leader when I felt like this little teddy bear.  Pulled in many directions by the forces around me - other people's agendas, not enough resources, many masters, accountability without authority - and I was in the middle of it all.  John Maxwell calls this The Tension Challenge.

The most important thing we can do about the Tension Challenge is to RECOGNIZE it.  It is real and it is expected when you are serving as a leader from the middle.  John Maxwell says "One of the toughest things about being a leader in the middle of an organization is that you can't be sure where you stand.  You can make some decisions.  You have access to some resources.  You can call the people in your area to action and direct them in their work.  At the same time, you also lack power in other areas.  And if you overstep your authority, you can get yourself into real trouble."

In the process of acknowledging that the Tension Challenge is part of our reality, let's explore the factors that impact the tension we may feel.  The effects of the tension challenge will not be experienced equally by all of us as our temperaments and abilities will certainly come in to play.  In addition, the way in which the tension impacts a leader is affected by the following factors:

1.  Empowerment - How much authority and responsibility does the person above you give you, and how clear are the lines?

How clearly the lines of authority and responsibility are drawn for you greatly impacts how strongly we feel the Tension Challenge.  The more vague the lines are drawn the greater the potential for stress.

2.  Initiative - How do you balance initiating and not overstepping your boundaries?

Leaders by their very nature are initiators.  John Maxwell says, "Good leaders rarely think in terms of boundaries, instead they think in terms of opportunities."  The number one characteristic of good leaders is their ability to make things happen.  Sometimes our desire to initiate will lead to an expansion of our responsibilities and boundaries.  Other times, it leads to conflict with out leader.

3.  Environment - What is the leadership DNA of the organization and leader?

Every organization has its own unique environment and takes on the personality of its leader.  It is important to understand and assess the environment of the organization in which you lead.  Does the environment increase or decrease the Tension Challenge for you?

4.  Job Parameters - How well do you know your job and how to do it?

We all remember how much tension we may have felt when starting a new job.  When we're not sure how to do the job and we're unsure what's expected of us, the tension we feel is quite high.  Even once we feel we've mastered the execution of the job, if we are unclear about others' expectations fo us, the tension remains.

5.  Appreciation - Can you live without the credit?

In the 360 Degree Leader, John Maxwell says, "Someone once said, 'What's causing so much disharmony among the nations is the fact that some want to beat the big drum, few are willing to face the music, and none will play second fiddle.'  The fact of the matter is that when you lead from the middle of an organization, you will not receive as much public recognition or appreciation as the leaders at the top.  That's just the way it is.  The greater your need to receive recognition, the more frustrated you are likely to feel.

My invitation to you is to spend some time thinking about the Tension Challenge and how these five areas may impact the amount of tension you feel as a leader in the middle.  Which ones have the most relevance to you?  Have you already developed ways to minimize the amount of stress you feel and how have you done that?

Next month we will explore how to relieve the Tension Challenge by:  Becoming comfortable with the middle; Knowing what to own and what to let go; Never violating your position or the trust of the leader; and Finding ways to relieve stress.
