The Power of Your Words
Reflecting on the beauty of the flowers in May, I am reminded of the words of the Prophet Isaiah: "For as the rain and snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and prosper in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:10-11) The relationships between the power of the seed and the power of the word creates a meaningful metaphor for exploration.
Yes, dear reader, flowers can be gentle reminders to each one of us that power resides in every seed just as it does in the very words we speak. Like the petals of a flower, our words can create beauty that bless and enhance our life. Words can also be limiting, lack-filled, and respresent less than who we are. We get to choose our experience. As we read in scripture from Isaiah, our words do go forth to accomplish that which we purpose. We have the ability to form words into affirmations, which can become living words, words of life, words of power. Words we speak either silently (our inner dialogue) or out-loud, have energy and can be life giving.
I invite you to create a mental pause button that will give you the opportunity to consider the words you speak. Imagine a world where we all come together and speak one truth,..."what power would be released if thousands could be united in speaking one thought!....When we come together in the Spirit, we are all one in the true place of the Most High. Our words become charged with great healing power." (How to Let God Help You, by Myrtle Fillmore)
This idea was the basis that Silent Unity Prayer was built on and continues today and blesses millions. As we open up and begin the practice of being aware of our words, speaking words of faith and truth become as natural as a planted seed unfolding. May you too see the beauty springing forth in the flowers and in your very words this month.
In Gratitude and Love,
Reverend Lei Lanni |

Words of Appreciation
By Jeri Royce
Not a week goes by that my Mom and best friend doesn't look at me and say, "Jeri, I hope you know how much I love and appreciate you." Sometimes I think to myself - "well of course I know, you don't need to tell me." But as I reflect on this simple expression - I realize that I know BECAUSE she tells me.
As I think about how good it feels to be so sure and clear about how another feels about me, I am reminded what an extremely important practice this is in my leadership role and in my relationships with others. Others may not always know how I feel about them, their work, their value to the organization, or their value to me - unless I tell them. Those whom I lead need to feel appreciated and valued and it's a need that I must not ignore. I'm sure you've heard the expression "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." In leadership it is easy to let our attention be drawn to the individuals who may not be performing up to the level we need them to - always late to meetings, don't keep their commitments, or complain to others rather than practice direct communication. We focus on them, and rightly so, because we may need to take action. However, at the same time, we should be focusing on those who are performing as expected - and we should be telling them so. This is the complexity of leadership.
I really like the definition of appreciation I found online: "the act of estimating the qualities of things and giving them their proper value." You see, as leaders our expression of appreciation comes from our own value system and the things that really matter to us. And that is what makes the expression of them so meaningful and so necessary to those who work for and with us.
Some examples of expressing your appreciation may be to tell a Prayer Chaplain how much you appreciated their stepping in to assist another with their wellness calling when the need arose, acknowledging the team for their attendance at monthly meetings, praising a co-worker or fellow program leader for a well-worded email, or thanking your leader for supporting you in a particularly sensitive manner. My invitation to you is to look around at those individuals with whom you interact and acknowledge the things that they do that have significance to you. Give "proper value" to the things that others do and to the place they hold in your life and your heart. As Lei Lanni said in her article, your words of appreciation will not "return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and prosper in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:10-11) |
