Be Strong and of Good Courage
"Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
In the first chapter of Joshua, we read about his calling from Spirit to be the leader of the Israelites after the strong leadership of Moses. These words speak to my heart, how about yours? How many times in our lives have we been called to step into shoes that sometimes feel too big for us to possibly fill? Or are you being called to show up in a bigger way than you thought possible? Do the current conditions you see in the world around you - economic, weather-related, war and unrest seem overwhelming and without purpose? You see our perspective of a situation is usually seen from the place we are standing - from the human experience. What Joshua and all of us are being called to do is see from the perspective of the Christ.
Whenever I face challenging circumstances or events beyond my control, the words of Joshua remind me that in Truth, there is nothing to fear for the presence of God is greater than any event or challenge and that I get to choose where I put my focus. Right where you are, God is! Right where I am, God is! When I remember these words and the courage of Joshua, my strength is fortified. I am able to keep on keeping on, no matter what.
Even with catastrophic events like the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear plant malfunctions in Japan, I can remind myself to send thoughts and prayers of strength and courage. I can focus on God's presence within and around our brothers and sisters in Japan and all of humanity instead of the fear-filled conditions. I choose where I focus.
I believe Joshua gave us a timeless example to overcome fear, confusion, feelings of overwhelm and even despair. So I invite you dear reader to breathe and take a moment to affirm: "I am strong and of good courage for the Lord, My God, is with me. Right here and right now."
In Love and Strength,
Reverend Lei Lanni |

To Manage or Not to Manage- that is the question? - Part 1
By Jeri Royce
One of the most important things we can do as good leaders is to lead ourselves well, and the key to leading ourselves well is to learn self-management. Many of us are quite skilled when it comes to management. We manage our finances, we manage our families, we manage our schedules, and we manage our programs. But how effective are we at managing ourselves?
In the 360 Degree Leader, John Maxwell says that leaders must self-manage in seven areas. Let's explore the first three:
1. Manage Your Emotions - Good leaders know when to display emotions and when to delay them. This is particularly important as we in leadership often see more than others and ahead of others so we often experience our emotions first. I am not suggesting that you bury your emotions but rather consider others - not yourself - first in how you handle and process them.
2. Manage Your Time - Time management is particularly tricky for leaders in the middle who are not in control of their own time. They have demands from above them, demands from below them, and sometimes demands from their colleagues. M. Scott Peck said, "Until you value yourself, you won't value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it."
3. Manage Your Priorities - Maxwell says that our goal should be to manage our time so that 80 percent of the time we are working where we are the strongest; 15 percent of the time we should be working where we are learning; and 5 percent of the time we are working in other necessary areas. The next time you are creating your "to do" list try creating a "stop doing list" based on the above percentages. You will be amazed at the results.
Middle leaders tend to know a lot about a lot of things. However, your overall effectiveness and your value within your organization will increase as you move more towards a specialist. Mastering these first three areas of managing yourself well will get you off to a great start.
Next month we will explore the remaining four areas - Managing Your Energy, Managing Your Thinking, Managing Your Words, and Managing Your Personal Life. |
