From Love...to Loving
February is typically the month we reflect on love, as people celebrate Valentine's Day. I would suggest that we incorporate the idea that each day can be likened to Valentine's Day filled with loving actions.
From my perspective, love is a verb which indicates action. Rev. Eric Butterworth said, "Despite the weight of psychological teaching or human belief, love is not an emotion or sensual experience. It is not the plaything of human volition. Love is the action of a totally transcendent power and process within you. Therefore, love does not begin in you and end in the one your love. It begins in a Cosmic Source, flows out through you, and goes on without end....Most importantly, life is not for existing or 'making do.' Life is for loving and living abundantly for you are, innately, a loveful person."
So, if Rev. Eric Butterworth is right, how do we express more from this innate loveful person that we are?
1st - Open a space in your awareness for this as a possibility. In other words, be willing to expand your present concept of love and loving action to a more universal energy. Think about it, pray on it and take it to the wisdom of your heart.
2nd - Observe yourself (lovingly - no judgements) and ask for this deeper dimension of love to gently move through you into your actions with others.
Mother Teresa has said: "It is not how much you do, but how much love you put into the doing that matters." So, dear reader, extend yourself to another - listen, be engaged, be patient, curious and quiet, filing your experiences with this dynamic energy of love and each day will feel like Valentine's Day.

Stuck or Unstuck - that is the question?
By Jeri Royce
Have you every felt really stuck? Stuck in your feelings about a relationship, a person, a situation, a reaction, or a circumstance. I mean stuck like in mud where no matter what you do or how you try to stay in your heart, the feelings keep surfacing. The problem with this is that we really can't move forward. We have trouble opening the door to a new way of thinking and expressing. I recently read something that helped me move out of a stuck place. It helped me reframe this idea of being stuck. It came from The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo in the reading for January 2nd. In it he wrote about a man who was going to paint a room in his house. He went to the store, bought the paint and supplies. "He mixed the paint outside and waddled to the door with a gallon in each hand, the drop cloth under his arm, and a wide brush in his mouth. He began to chuckle in telling what happened, 'I teetered there for minutes, trying to open the door, not wanting to put anything down. I was so stubborn. I had the door almost open when I lost my grip, stumbled backward, and wound up on the ground, red gallons all over me." Mark goes on to say "Time and time again, we are offered the chance to truly learn this: We cannot hold on to things and enter. We must put down what we carry, open the door, and then take up only what we need to bring inside." This had such a profound impact on me. I realized that if I was to move from this stuck place - I had to let go what I was holding on to in order to move forward. I had to ask myself - what belief, self-talk, or other thing was I holding on to that would not serve me if I was trying to move forward. Did I truly want to move forward if I was stubbornly holding on to things I did not need? I had a woman that I worked with - supervised actually - who I continually butted heads with. No matter what I said or did, we landed in the place that was not productive for either one of us. After reading this story, I reflected on my relationship with her. If I truly wanted to create a new dynamic - what did I need to let go of in order to step inside. I realized that I had a very strongly held belief that she was argumentative and difficult. Every interaction I had with her was viewed from that belief which in turn created my reactions. If I wanted to help our relationship move beyond where it was - I had to put down some things. I had to let go of my need to be right. So I did. Now, while this may sound simple I can tell you it wasn't easy and it took some time. But I can also tell you that the relationship I have with this woman has been transformed. I worked at letting go rather than working at changing. I let go of the things that were not bringing about harmony and I found that harmony was indeed what was created. Not only harmony - but I began to find so much value in her as an individual, as a team member, and as a friend.
Our effectiveness as a leader depends on our ability to identify those places where we are stuck and come up with a strategy for moving forward. So, I ask you - is there a place in your life where you feel stuck? What might you need to put down so that you may enter? "Meditate on some threshold you are having trouble crossing in your life. It might be at work, at home, in a relationship, or the doorway to greater peace. Breathe steadily and look to yourself to see if you are carrying too much to open the door. Breathe slowly and with each out-breath put the things you are carrying down. Breathe freely now and open the door." (Excerpts from The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo) |
