Prayer Chaplain Program - Foundation Review |
Holding Spiritual Space
One of the most important foundational skills of the Prayer Chaplain Program is "holding spiritual space" - consciously calling on the presence of God. Prayer Chaplains experience this practice through the sacred circle, and the process to facilitate this is to take a breath, focus your attention on your heart, and remember that with God, all things are possible. In other words know that regardless of the appearance, circumstance, situation, or condition, God is greater. |
5 Tips for Volunteer Recognition and Appreciation
By Jerry Burt (JB)
I receive e-mails from Dr. Judy Esmond who shares her volunteer management expertise with those of us who are running volunteer programs such as the Prayer Chaplain Program. Her website contains lots of information and good resources that I think you will find useful.
I would like to share with you a tip from one of her recent emails regarding volunteer recognition and appreciation. Judy's Tip #1 is that appreciation needs to be genuine. This sounds simple, doesn't it? Simple but important - volunteers know the difference between sincere appreciation and overdone flattery.
When your Prayer Chaplains keep their commitments, show up on time for monthly meetings and other activities, and work cooperatively within the boundaries of the program - genuinely and generously praise them for their efforts. A heartfelt "thank you" goes a long way! |

Embracing the Past in a New Way
"Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" -Matthew 5:3
Last month I invited you to join me on an exploration of the timeless attitudes of being as taught by Jesus - The Beatitudes. We begin our series by looking at the first of the Beatitudes which comes from the only sermon Jesus gave that is completely recorded, the Sermon on the Mount. "Dr. George Lamsa says ...Jesus actually had a carefully prepared manuscript for this particular sermon...and quite likely fell into the hands of Matthew." (Discover the Power Within You by Eric Butterworth) Through this sermon Eric expounds, "Jesus showed (us) what to be, how to think...the outline of His ideals is actually a series of attitudes of being, states of mind, clearly promising definite results that follow certain inner changes." I believe these words from the past provide us with guidance for practical living in the present.
With this, we look at the first Beatitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" the first word in this statement "blessed" simply means "to enrich." And as we look at "poor in spirit", I believe Jesus is talking about the expanding potential within us, inviting us to be open and flexible to receive a new way of being. To be "poor in spirit" is to be humble, to be selfless and without pride. "...for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Metaphysically, heaven is a condition of mind, a state of consciousness to be attained by each one of us. The kingdom of heaven is a place of peace that is deep within each one of us.
As we look once again at this first Beatitude in it's entirety "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" one can interpret it to mean that we are enriched as we humbly open ourselves to new, deeper meanings, and through this practice we are filled with peace. This will assist us in all of our daily activities and bring about richer, more fulfilling experiences. And isn't that truly heaven? Blessed be,
Lei Lanni Affirmation: "I am open and receptive to the inflow and the outpouring of all there is in God."

What Do I Know for Sure?
By Jeri Royce
I've been attending a book study exploring Wendy Craig-Purcell's new book entitled Ask Yourself This. In each chapter Wendy poses a series of questions designed to help deepen the reader's spiritual exploration and discovery. I am very much enjoying the book and would like to share with you an experience I recently had while exploring a question from Chapter 1 - "What Do I Know for Sure?"
For most of my life, my spiritual foundation has been rooted in the Unity teachings. I consider that fortunate because among the things I know for sure - or thought I did anyway - is that God is everywhere present no matter what the outer circumstance and that I am made in God's image and likeness. I also know that the Truths I have long held in my consciousness are often the most difficult to "hold on to" when faced with challenging circumstances. In fact, my greatest gift came when I stopped "holding on" and started letting go.
So, when faced with a scary medical "diagnosis" and prospect of major surgery, I asked myself the question - "What Do I know for Sure?" I wrestled with this as we often do when faced with things we don't understand or that make us unsure of what our next step is. But isn't this the defining moment? It was In the wrestling I discovered that by surrendering to the activity of Spirit in my life, I was able to see the activity that had otherwise been masked by my fear.
Although I might not have believed that having surgery was a demonstration of the activity of Spirit, I was guided to a surgeon who was skilled and compassionate, the urgency with which I proceeded helped me avoid a much more serious situation, I have been able to take the time I needed to recover and heal, and I have been supported in prayer and love by my family and friends. Do I know that God is everywhere present no matter what the outer circumstances? You bet I do! Through this experience my faith and trust in the ever present activity God was deepend.
The "stuff" we encounter in life whether it be financial challenge, leading a program or organization, or dealing with our own illness or that of a loved one does sometimes make us question, and it also give us the the opportunity to practice and strengthen our spiritual muscles in a way that transforms us forever and helps us evolve as spiritual beings in this human experience. The gift is in the challenge - big or small - and the internal process that leads us to a deeper discovery of ourselves and a stronger awareness of God.
