You Are the Light of the World
Yes, dear reader, You are the light of the world. Regardless of circumstances, conditions, or outward appearances each of us has the light within us. We each have the opportunity and the choice to be conscious about the light that we are. As Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." (Matt. 4:14-16) This scripture is particularly poignant to me at this time in our world, and in this holy season.
How do we "let our light shine?" Right where you are - with your family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, you can choose to let the light of your awareness shine. Perhaps it shows up as a silent prayerful knowing in the middle of confusion, or standing and speaking the truth as you know it, as a smile of encouragement, or as an offer of assistance. Every precious moment is filled with this potential. The choice is ours. Our light of awareness knows that the presence and power of God is greater than any seeming darkness.
During this holiday season, as our world becomes beautifully decorated with Christmas lights, I invite you to consciously decorate your life with the "light of who you are." Our brother Jesus Christ not only affirmed our light but also called us into action. He fully demonstrated the power of God's presence in every moment, every experience, and every condition and He invites us to do the same. "You are the light of the world!"

Essentials of Fly Casting As it is in fly fishing so it is in leadership or life for that matter. Technique really does matter. As every fly fisherman knows, having the right gear, the right fly, and all the other "right conditions" won't matter if you can't get the line to the fish in a way that makes him want to bite. And that is where the essentials for fly casting come in. I would like to share with you some correlations I see between the important techniques of fly casting and leadership.
1) Slack - eliminate slack. Before we cast our line, we need to pull up any slack that may be present - it's really a step in preparation for our cast. Don't we also need to prepare for our roles as leaders? We attend training and classes, but we also need to continue our education. Our "preparation" if you will is ongoing and life-long.
2) Smooth Acceleration - rod accelerates at constant rate. Consistency and smoothness are important to our success as leaders. Remember, slow and steady usually does win the race. Jerky inconsistent movements result in a tangled line.
3) Casting Stroke - short line, short stroke, long line, long stroke. In other words, adapt your stroke depending on the length of your line. Isn't it also important to be adaptable to the conditions around us and to the diversity of those we are leading and serving? There is a saying "The only thing constant in life is change." So, as strong leaders it behooves us to be adept at adjusting our style with the ever changing landscape. Short line, short stroke - long line, long stroke.
4) Straight Line Path of Rod Tip - line goes where the rod tip goes. The intention with which we live our lives or show up as leaders will determine the outcomes we achieve. Do you set an intention when you wake up in the morning for your day? Do you set an intention for the type of leader you want to be and the positive influence you want to have on those around you? Setting your intention and sticking with it will insure your accomplishments.
5) Pause - timing: short line, short pause. Long line, long pause. The most important part of this technique is PAUSE. Sometimes we need to pause - pause before making a decision, pause before speaking, pause when we're listening. Pausing gives us an opportunity to breathe, go to our heart and remember to trust in the activity of God.
Being a good leader requires that we hone our skills just as we would if we wanted to be a good fly caster. The skills required for leadership are many - some come to us naturally and some have to be learned. I commend you for saying "yes" to being a leader - in your family, in your community, in your church, and in your workplace. Keep up the good work - and happy casting! |
