Monthly Meeting Tip!

I have come across a monthly meeting activity that I would like to share with you. It can serve both to connect your Prayer Chaplains to their service as volunteers and to each other.
Ask your Prayer Chaplains to bring a quote written on a piece of paper that expresses how they feel about being a Prayer Chaplain or that has special meaning to them. Then in small groups each person reads out their quote to the group and explains why they chose that quote.
This 15 - 20 minute activity helps create small group conversations and gives your Prayer Chaplains a real insight into how others are thinking and feeling about their service or their lives. You can have one Prayer Chaplain in each small group close their session in prayer.

Prayer for Protection Finger Mala
These prayer beads have been specially created to use with the Prayer for Protection. The stones represent the 4 characteristics of God in the Prayer:

This is the Day!
Recently, I awoke with this message in my mind, "This is the day!" Then my mind said, "For what? This is the day, for what?" As I took that message into my morning meditation, I felt an overwhelming feeling of the present moment and the value of each moment. My heart said, "Each day you have the opportunity to LIVE fully in the day - this - today - is the day and it will not return." As I pondered that experience throughout that day, I began to realize the significance for me and so I offer this to you, dear reader.
We have heard it said so many times that each day is a gift. Yet until we decide that this is the day, each day goes by without our conscious intention. In the words of the Psalmist "This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Palms 118:24)
What could happen if we each chose like this:
Healing my heart
Loving interactions
Forgiving myself
Forgiving others
Reaching out for prayers
Being a light in all situations
Refraining from gossip
What energy do you suppose would be created if every morning on awakening we each made a conscious decision - an intention - for this to be the day?
Will you join me in a conscious intention to be conscious of each day as an opportunity to live fully? God's presence is with us in each moment - always present to assist us in our choices - thank you God. This is the day - what will your intention be? Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

My dad, JB, and I are avid fly fisherman. We spend lots of time and attention on our equipment - the proper rod, just the right fly line, and of course the perfectly tied fly. While every great fisherman knows that the most important aspect to being successful is knot tying, surprisingly few anglers pay much attention to them. Knots connect us to fish. A poorly designed knot results in slipping, breaking and lost fish. You could say that knot tying is a foundational skill in the art of fly fishing.
So, you may be asking right about now what all this has to do with Prayer Chaplain Programs? I'm so glad you asked. The foundational pieces of the Prayer Chaplain Program - holding spiritual space, listening, prayer, confidentiality, warning signals, human conditions, and change and grief - are the good, strong, and well designed knots that keep our Prayer Chaplain Programs strong and healthy and connect us to those we serve in a deep and profound way.
The skills involved in mastering these foundational pieces need to be modeled and taught by you as trainers and learned and lived by your Prayer Chaplains. These foundational pieces cannot be short-cut in the mandatory/core training sessions and need to be reinforced throughout the ongoing training (monthy meetings). So, how's your foundation? Do you feel it is a strong and well designed knot or do you feel it is loose and perhaps may slip or even break?
I invite you to take a conscious inventory of the strength of the foundation of your Prayer Chaplain Program. Are you expanding your mandatory/core training enough to create the learning that needs to occur for your Prayer Chaplains to fully "get it"? Are your monthly meetings filled with good and engaging content and are you using that oportunity to reinforce the foundational pieces? Are you holding fast to the boundaries you have established in your program and being careful not to make exceptions? Remember that no knot breaks until it slips.
This is sacred service that adds so much to our lives, our communities and our world. Just as knots connect us to fish, the Prayer Chaplain Program connects us to eachother and to our congregants. A healthy strong foundation insures a healthy strong program. So, let's pay attention to our knots so not even one gets away!
