Now, you may be asking yourself - what does this have to do with volunteers? The answer is a lot! The gist the song, comical as it may be, reinforces two major principles in good volunteer management - take action and there are many ways to reach the same outcome.
Volunteers do what they do - volunteer - for many personal reasons but research has shown us that they are wanting to add value, seeking opportunities to do something they don't do elsewhere in their life, and wanting their volunteer work to use their skills and natural
abilities or help them develop new ones. These goals are not met accidentally, they are inherent in the way volunteer programs are designed and managed.
The Prayer Chaplain Program itself is designed intentionally to provide opportunities for individuals to take the next step in their spiritual growth and provides a structure for the way the service is delivered, but your good execution and leadership is important to the success of the program. From the beginning orientation and core training, to the monthly meetings, dedication ceremony, wellness calling, and ongoing service, there are many opportunities for you to infuse these activities with the components that will keep your volunteers coming back year after year and will entice new volunteers to join your program.
Keeping your monthly meetings fresh and creative, taking every opportunity to say "thank you for your service" and show recognition, being available to provide ongoing support, modeling the principles you are teaching - confidentiality, self-care, keeping commitments, etc., and being a good 360 degree leader are all actions that you take with your own unique style that will aid you in successfully managing the Prayer Chaplain Program and make it an invaluable asset to your ministry. |

The Miracle Working Power of God!
Have you ever felt like you needed a big miracle in your life? Have you ever felt weighed down when you had too much to do and you didn't even know where to begin? Whenever you feel inundated or stuck in your life, I invite you to consciously pause and take a breath. Every time we breathe, we breathe in God life. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, no matter what your outer or inner circumstances, you can always pause, breathe and make room for the miracle working power of Spirit.
Miracles are the natural outworking of the Law. As we align ourselves with God, we open the space for God to show up. Whether it's feeding the 5000, or taking the cat to the vet, getting the kids off to school, doing yard work or completing the project at work. The miracle is that everything will get done, everything is in Divine Order. Whenever we pause and breathe, we create a space for the activity of God to move in and work through us.
Jesus stood in the presence of God in all circumstances, at all times. He embraced the mystery of our humanity and called forth our Divinity. No matter what the appearance, he saw beyond the human condition to the spiritual reality. He saw the wholeness of God life in all circumstances.
As we embrace the mystery of our own humanity and look to God in all situations, we can experience the miracle working power of Spirit in our lives harmonizing, balancing and bringing us blessings of completion in all that is ours to do.

Leadership - A 360-Degree Proposition
Practice to Lead Down - "Follow me, I'll add value to you."
As we have been discussing, leadership is traditionally thought of as a top-down activity - the leaders lead and the followers follow. However, "because 360-Degree Leaders are by definition nonpositional, they lead through influence, not position, power, or leverage. And they take that approach not only with those above and alongside them, but also with those who work under them." "360-Degree Leaders take the time and effort to earn influence with their followers just as they do with those over whom they have no authority."
This is a particularly important concept for those of you that are leading teams of Prayer Chaplains. While you do have the authority to make decisions that might impact their ability to serve - your Prayer Chaplains are not paid staff, they are volunteers - so your ability to create influence is the best way to insure they will follow your lead.
Lead-Down Principle #1 is "Walk Slowly Through the Halls."
- "Slow down" - Take time away from the busyness of running the program and connect with your Prayer Chaplains.
- "Express that you care" - Your Prayer Chaplains will want to know that you care about them as people and not just the service they are providing.
- "Create a healthy balance of personal and professional interest" - "Personal interest goes deeper - it shows your heart." Take an interest in what's going on with your Prayer Chaplains on a personal level without being nosy or intrusive.
- "Pay attention when people start avoiding you" - You will learn a lot from noticing those Prayer Chaplains that you never quite seem to connect with and go out of your way to make that connection.
- "Tend to the people,and they will tend to the business" - "A 360-Degree Leader has many exceptional qualities. But one thing they all have in common is that despite their passion for the vision and their love of action, they give the majority of their effort to the people. Leaders who tend only to the business often end up losing the people and the business."
Walking slowly through the halls requires special application for you as a Prayer Chaplain coordinator because your Prayer Chaplain's service does not all take place in an office. Have you thought about being present during varied times when wellness calling is taking place to make connections before the Prayer Chaplains begin their service and pray them in? Be present on Sunday morning during their service times. Connect with your Prayer Chaplains by email or by sending notes to their home. This will require some creativity and extra effort on your part, but the pay-off will be invaluable.
