Understanding Where You Stand

Where do you stand?  How solid is the foundation you stand on?  As you are going about your days, and events happen, whether to you personally or as you observe happening on a global basis, take a big deep breath, consciously go to your heart and take a look at where and how you are standing.  God - the One Presence and One Power - stands under all things, but this does not mean that all expressions or manifestations are the highest or best.  God-energy is behind all things but all things are not "God-like!"

As we each develop an understanding of who and what we are, from our head to our feet, all that is contained between them and all that is beyond them, we have an opportunity to know the Truth.  To know what is within us and what stands under us, to be sure that our spiritual feet are on firm and solid ground - that is Truth.  And in each moment we can choose the high road, to either stay solid in our Truth or to engage that human aspect of our selves, our feelings and emotions, which can lead us into drama and confusion - that which is not our Truth.

So are we just to know that God is at work in spite of all appearances and let it go at that?  No, not always.  It is important to remember that understanding is more than mental cognition.  It is a spiritual faculty that connects with Divine Intelligence.  We can claim this awareness and confidently move forward in an assured manner, even though we don't have all the answers, and don't need the details.  We can release our need to know why things happen or don't happen, let go of the outcome and move to that place of Trust, trust that Spirit is in charge, that Spirit takes care of all that needs to be done in any given circumstance.  In so doing, we also remember we are on solid ground and we are divinely guided and directed to do what is ours to do.  Just as Moses was told that where he stood was holy ground, where you stand is holy ground.  Claim it and remember.

This month, dear friend, as we contemplate the Spiritual Power of Understanding, I invite you to look at scripture, at this interchange between Jesus and Thomas:  "Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God, trust also in me.  In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you..." Thomas said to Jesus, "Lord, we do not know where you are going.  How can we know the way?"  Jesus answered, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to God except through me.  If you know me, you will know my Father also.  From now on you do know God and have seen God." John 14:1-7

Jesus is not asking Thomas to believe in something that he has never seen before.  He is telling him to take what he already knows, is living, and is asking him to extend it further - to trust.  The Christ in each one of us knows the way to do this and leads us to increased understanding.  Dear friend, I hold you in my highest loving thoughts and I stand with you in knowing the Truth of Spiritual Understanding as you put this principle into practice for yourself.

Blessing you with Light & Love,

Lei Lanni

Volunteer Resources

As the Prayer Chaplain Trainer/Coordinator, you manage volunteers.  Many of us in this role are not necessarily "trained" in managing volunteers - and yet our ability to do so is important to the success of our programs.

This month, I want to pass along to you a link to a website that I hope will be a valuable resource to you.

Leadership

Leadership - A 360-Degree Proposition
Practice to Lead Across - "Follow me, I'll walk with you."

How do we know the difference between a leader that is simply competent and one that is accomplished - has taken his or her skills to the next level?  "Compentent leaders can lead followers.  They can find, gather, recruit, and enlist them."  To be a truly great leader one must be able to lead other leaders - in addition to those above him - lead those who walk alongside him.

John Maxwell says, "To succeed as a 360-Degree Leader who leads peer-to-peer, you have to work at giving your colleagues reasons to respect and follow you.  How do you do that?  By helping your peers win.  If you can help them win, you will not only help the organization but will also help yourself."

As leaders of the Prayer Chaplain Program within your ministry who are your peers?  Who are the other volunteer or staff positions that lead programs, groups of people, etc.?  Who do you serve alongside?  These are the people with whom you want to build strong relationships and create influence.

John Maxwell gives us a great tool in his chapter on Lead-Across Principle #1 - The Leadership Loop.  This leadership loop begins with caring and ends with succeeding:

1.  Caring - Show people that you care about them by taking a real interest in them.  Many leaders become so task driven that they don't give people enough attention.
2.  Learning - Take the time to get to know your peers, their likes and dislikes, their best skills, etc.
3.  Appreciating - "We tend to appreciate people who can do things we admire.  But if we only appreciate people like ourselves, we're missing so much."
4.  Contributing - Go out of your way to add value to your peers that helps their success.  Fill in their gaps and don't keep your best stuff to youself.
5.  Verbalizing - Take the time to affirm to your peers what you value about them and what they're doing right.  "The word affirm comes from ad firmare, which means 'to make firm.'  So when you affirm people, you make firm within them the things you see about them."
6.  Leading - Having practiced the five previous steps, you are ready to start leading your peers.  "The things you've done up to now have served to build your relationship with them, give you credibility, and display that your motives are good.  With that kind of history, you will have earned the opportuniy to influence them."
7.  Succeeding - "Great leaders don't use people so that they can win.  They lead people so that they all can win together."  Helping others succeed breeds more success for you and the organization in which you serve.

"When Lou Holtz was coaching Notre Dame's football team, he was quoted as saying, 'Do what's right! Do the best you can and treat others the way you want to be treated, because they will ask three questions:  (1) Can I trust you? (2) Do you believe in this?  Are you committed to this - have a passion for this?
(3) Do you care about me as a person?'  If the people around you can answer yes to all of those questions, then you have a very good chance of making an impact on thier lives."
