| The Power of Encouragement
As I reflected on my message for this month, I was reminded of an experience I had in Norwich, England while visiting and meditating in the "cell" of Anchoress Julian where she, from the window of this room, gave counsel and comfort to the burdened and perplexed. Julian was born late in 1342 so she says in her writings that she received her revelations in May 1373 when she was thirty-and-a-half. It seems that she was critically ill and received sixteen revelations of God's love for all humanity.
Julian had not set out to be a writer but after being entrusted with such powerful messages, her passion to share and encourage others compelled her to write. Her writing was called "Revelations of Divine Love." Julian's power of encouragement was shared with a 14th Century England in chaos. Social, political and theological change was in the air. She lived during five reigns and monarchy often changed hands by violent means. In fact, for the whole of her lifetime,England was engaged in the Hundred Years War.
Julian's anchored presence amid the community was seen both as a change to the activism of ordinary people and a symbol of stability in faith. She shared encouragement with those who came to her with sayings given her through the revelations like:
"All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."
"I say full clearly that ere God made us He loved us; which love was never slacked, nor ever shall be. And in this Love our life is everlasting."
"He showed me more a little thing, the size of a hazel-nut, on the palm of my hand round like a ball. I looked at it thoughtfully and wondered, "What is this?" And the answer came, 'It is all that is made.' I marveled that it continued to exist and did not suddenly disintegrate; it was so small. And again my mind supplied the answer, 'It exists, both now and for ever, because God loves it.' In short, everything owed its existence to the love of God."
Julian's conviction was that the earth, so microscopic against the cosmos was held together because it was created by love and that love was its meaning. A message so timeless and I believe carried through the centuries with the power to encourage us in the 21st century. Thank you God for Julian of Norwich and the opportunity to share her powerful message with those I love and care about.
In closing, I would like to share this timeless prayer from Julian:
COME HOLY SPIRIT, Spirit of Love,
Spirit of Discipline. In the Silence
COME to us and bring us YOUR PEACE;
REST in us that we may be tranquil & still;
SPEAK to us as each heart needs to hear;
REVEAL to us things hidden & things longed for;
REJOICE in us that we may praise & be glad;
PRAY in us that we may be at one with YOU and with each other;
REFRESH & RENEW us from Your LIVING SPRINGS of WATER
HOLY SPIRIT, dwell in us that Your LIGHT
may shine through us, & that in our hearts YOU
may find Your homeliest home & endless dwelling. Amen.
In Timeless Encouragement and With Love,
Lei Lanni Affirmation: "I am filled with the living waters of Spirit."

Recruiting Boomers
When we think about recruiting congregants to serve in the Prayer Chaplain Program, we sometimes forget that they are first and foremost volunteers. In addition, we shouldn't forget that we can attract volunteers to support the program in a variety of roles - not just as a Prayer Chaplain. Volunteers on the administrative side of the program can be an invluable resource to you as the Program Coordinator. Below are some things to keep in mind when trying to attract Boomers to your Prayer Chaplain Program.
1. These volunteers are adults who are exiting careers and lifestyles that took decades of education and learning to achieve. Be careful not to underestimate their experience and be prepared to fully explain the purpose and value of the program.
2. Prior to your recruitment, create specific volunteer roles and oultines for the work you expect these volunteers to be doing. This demographic will appreciate a more professional introduction to your organization.
3. Know what specific skill sets and tasks your program needs, and be able to explain to Boomers why the roles they will be filling are vital, not just "grunt work."
4. Be flexible in your recruitment and communication styles. Allow Boomers to be in contact with you over the phone or in person, but also online and through text messaging.

Leadership - A 360-Degree Proposition
Lead-Up Principle #1 - Lead Yourself Exceptionally Well
 The proposition of the 360 degree leader implies that most of us in leadership positions are leading from the middle. Leading from the middle presents obstacles that leaders at the top simply don't experience. Leading from the middle requires us to lead in all directions - up, down, and across. The point of this and subsequent articles on this topic is to give you some things to think about and hopefully some additional "tools" to have in your tool box when navigating your way through life. When thinking about leading from the middle, an excellent place to start is with us, and the first principle of Leading Up is to Lead Yourself Exceptionally Well. In his book, The 360 Degree Leader, John Maxwell says "The key to leading yourself well is to learn self-management. I have observed that most people put too much emphasis on decision making and too little on decision managing. As a result, they lack focus, discipline, intentionality, and purpose." Let's explore the areas that are most important for us to self-manage - your emotions, your time, your priorities, your energy, your thinking, your words, and your personal life. Manage your emotions - Managing your emotions does not mean that you don't have them. As a leader you will have emotions about the things that matter most to you. The key is to be in touch with your emotions and choose when, how, and to whom you express them. Manage your time - Time management for a middle manager can be particularly tricky since your time is not your own and the assumption can be that you will do what it takes to get the job done. So, chose wisely how you spend your time. Manage your priorities - Leaders in the middle wear multiple hats and don't always have control over your responsibilities or your schedule so your priorities need to be continually shifting. Maxwell suggests the following - "80 percent of your time - work where you are strongest; 15 percent of your time - work where you are learning; and 5 percent of your time - work in other necessary areas." Manage your energy - We like to think that our energy is endless but that simply isn't true. Understanding what circumstances and people are energy drainers versus those that feed you is critical. Only you can create the balance that is required to keep your energy level full. Manage your thinking - Good leaders need good thinking time. Middle leaders are often the busiest in the organization and planning time to think is essential to your effectiveness. John Maxwell shares a disciplined approach to this by suggesting the use of a "thinking chair," a designated chair in your office where you sit down with an agenda and simply think. Try not to make the agenda too daunting and don't exceed 30-minute increments in your chair. Manage your words - Words are powerful but when used carelessly or excessively can cause problems. As a leader your words will be measured by those around you. "If you have something worthwhile to say, say it briefly and well. If you don't, sometimes the best thing to do is remain silent." Manage your personal life - Balance in your work life and home life are critical to your sustained happiness. "You can do everything right at work and manage yourself well there, but if your personal life is a mess, it will eventually turn everything else sour." It doesn't serve you to succeed at work and sacrifice your family. (Excerpts taken from The 360 Degree Leader by John C. Maxwell) |
