Wisdom of the Ages

You and I each have the wisdom of the ages within us.  Open yourself to the awareness that in Truth each of us has access to the wisdom of God, in all circumstances, at all times.

 "And he said, go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.  And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still, small voice."  These words were spoken by Elijah (1 Kings 19:11, 12).

Elijah was a prophet in the Old Testament who was seeking guidance from God.  Does this sound familiar to you?  How often do we find ourselves in the midst of life's dramas, seeking guidance from God?  Like Elijah, we discover that the guidance is always available from the still small voice.  No matter what you experience in life, the winds, the fires, or the earthquakes, God is everywhere present and you can access that connection through the still small voice of Spirit.

I invite you dear reader, to breathe, and allow your focus to move within.  As you take your attention from the outer you are able to trust that the wisdom you desire is available to you, right now.  For right where you are, God is!  And the wisdom of the ages is yours in this very moment.

Blessing you with Light & Love,

Lei Lanni

Volunteer Retention Tips

The Key components in a volunteer program that enhance retention are placement, orientation, training, supervision, evaluation, and recognition.

1.  Retention begins when you have accurately described the volunteer position and assessed whether the potential volunteer is right for the job.  Hence, retention begins in the interview process.

2.  The orientation is important in allowing the volunteer to feel as though he/she is part of the ministry and ensure he/she understands the ministry and the program they are volunteering for on a larger level.

3.  Use as many different training techniques as possible such as:  lecture, written material, role-playing, etc.  Adults learn best when they have practical and experiential modes of learning.  Ask for their input and allow them to practice and offer immediate feedback.

5.  The training should also expain the method of supervision - so that volunteers understand to whom they should turn with a question or for feedback.

6.  Provide authentic on-going recognition of the volunteer both verbally and concretely.

Leadership
Leadership - A 360-Degree Proposition

Great leaders through history - Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandi, Martin Luther King Jr. - share a common thread in their record of leadership.  While perhaps not intentionally, they praciced the art of 360-degree leadership.  Whether you are a leader in your company, community, church, or family you will benefit from understanding and practicing the principles in this powerful leadership idea.

We have been taught by traditional management theory that leadership is simply making those who are below you in the hirearchy follow the direction you have laid before them.  My proposition to you is that leadership at its most effective is really about influence and should be practiced in all directions - up, down, and across.  In his book The 360 Degree Leader, John Maxwell outlines the foundation of what creates influence:

"Integrity - builds relationships on trust;
Nurturing - cares about people as individuals;
Faith - believes in people;
Listening - values what others have to say;
Understandng - sees from their point of view;
Enlarging - helps others become bigger;
Navigating - assists others through difficulties;
Connecting - initiates positive relationships; and
Empowering - gives them the power to lead."

Future newsletter articles will explore the principles of 360-degree leadership and the skills required to influence those you lead.  Some of these ideas include Lead-Up Principle #1 - Lead Yourself Exceptionally Well; Lead-Across Principle #1 - Understand, Practice, and Compete the Leadership Loop; and Lead-Down Principle #1 - Walk Slowly Through the Halls.
