SURGERY SPOTLIGHT Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass
This is the most common of the gastric bypass procedures, allowing small amounts of food to be tolerated and some calories to be absorbed. The procedure is offered in three ways, depending upon a patient's individual needs and goals.
· A proximal gastric bypass is the most common, least aggressive option. Five-year weight loss averages 50-75%. · A medial gastric bypass offers a moderately aggressive option, with five-year weight loss averaging 70-80%. · A distal gastric bypass is the most aggressive option, with five-year weight loss averaging 75-85%.

ASK THE SURGEON
How can obesity affect a couple's ability to have children?
Women who are overweight often have trouble conceiving
because of a hormonal imbalance, which can cause them to stop ovulating. Men
who are overweight have lower sperm count and lower sperm concentrations. Obese men, regardless of age, seem to have
an almost two-fold increase in infertility.
Once pregnant, obese mothers face additional risk factors
including hypertension, gestational diabetes, urinary infection, toxemia,
overdue delivery resulting in induction and a higher risk for C-section.
