WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY SAFE, EFFECTIVE TYPE 2 DIABETES TREATMENT
Not only does one of the largest studies on bariatric surgery find the procedure to be as safe as other routine surgeries, two other studies confirm that it also appears to stave off diabetes for the long term.
SURGERY SPOTLIGHT
Adjustable Gastric Band
lap bandGastric banding is the least invasive, most reversible surgical option. There are two types of gastric bands available:
  • LAP-BANDŽ
  • REALIZE™ Band
In this procedure, a restrictive band is placed around the upper part of the stomach so a patient feels full after just a few bites of food. The doctor can control the amount of food that passes through by increasing or decreasing the size of the band, according to each patient's individual weight-loss needs.

In 97 percent of cases, the procedure is done
laparoscopically on an outpatient basis. And it results in an average of a 75 percent weight reduction in three years. The band can be removed if complications arise.
ASK THE SURGEON
How does weight loss surgery help with diabetes?

Dr A                   Dr. C. Gabriel Alperovich, MD

Any weight loss, whether surgical or not, will help bring type 2 diabetes under better control. Gastric bypass, in addition, affects the body's hormones in a way that improves diabetes even before weight loss has occurred.

OBESITY IS NATION'S BIGGEST HEALTH THREAT
tape measureThe latest study on Americans' waistlines concludes that the country is getting fatter. As late as 1991, no state had an obesity rate higher than 20 percent. Today, every state but Colorado does. Washington ranks 28th, with one in four residents considered obese.
