WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY WORKS EVEN FOR MODERATELY OBESE
Surgeons once recommended weight-loss surgery only for severely obese patients who failed to drop pounds with conventional weight-loss methods, but a review now finds that bariatric surgery helps the moderately obese lose more weight, too.

SURGERY SPOTLIGHT
Gastric Bypass
Stomach ImageRoux-en-y Gastric Bypass (RGB) is the most common of the gastric bypass procedures, allowing small amounts of food to be tolerated and some calories to be absorbed.

The RGB operation staples and divides the upper stomach horizontally, leaving a small pouch with approximately a one-ounce capacity.

In general I advise patients that the operation they are most comfortable with, is the best operation for them. There are however, relative benefits between bypass and banding. Banding may be a better operation for the very high risk patient (prior heart attack or severe COPD), while bypass tends to have better results with diabetics, with acid reflux, or with the very obese (BMI above 65).
