CBS NEWS 60 MINUTES FEATURES BARIATRIC SURGERY
The Bypass Effect on Diabetes, Cancer

It's pretty well known to doctors that the most successful treatment for obesity is surgery, especially the gastric bypass operation. But here's something the medical world is just realizing: that the gastric bypass operation has other, even more dramatic effects. It can force type 2 diabetes into almost instant remission and it appears to reduce the risk of cancer.

Is obesity related to cancer?

There is an increasing body of evidence linking obesity to a higher risk of breast, endometrium, kidney, esophagus and colon cancer. A recent study looking at the mortality after gastric bypass showed a death reduction of 60% due to cancer, when comparing gastric bypass patients to patients of similar weight who did not undergo the surgery.

As more is discovered on the relationship between obesity and cancer, it is already clear that strategies to promote health should emphasize prevention as well as early intervention against obesity.

TIFFANY'S STORY
Total weight loss: 100 lbs

"I was too young to live this way."
Tiffany longed to be an active participant in the lives of her children, but she suffered from diabetes, asthma, back pain and more. She felt she had to do something because she was too young to live that way. She chose to have gastric bypass surgery and within a month nearly every ailment was gone.

"After surgery I lost 100 pounds. I feel healthier than ever. It is so wonderful to be an active participant with my family," says Tiffany. "What I was looking forward to was just being healthy. And that's exactly what I got, my health back."

HEALTH TIP
Exercise may speed weight loss after gastric bypass

People who've undergone surgery to manage their obesity may lose more weight if they start exercising, a new study shows.

While regular exercise is a well-known way to keep body weight in check, it has not been clear whether people who start exercising after gastric bypass fare any better than those who remain sedentary. The new study suggests that they do.
