Maria Zimmerman, Deputy Director of the Office of Sustainable communities at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), told attendees at the AIA 2011 National Convention that architects have a critical role to play in federal livable community programs. HUD announced that it will fund a second round of sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grants. The program will award a total of $100 million to conduct metropolitan planning efforts to "metropolitan and multi-jurisdictional planning efforts that integrate housing, land use, economic workforce development, transportation and infrastructure investments". During the American Public Transportation Association Conference in New Orleans, Rotary Lift will present "Sustainability and Vehicle Maintenance Lifts" on Monday, October 2 at 4pm at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel. 2011 SMART GROWTH SUMMIT

 2011 Smart Growth Summit

The Center for Planning Excellence will hold its 2011 Smart Growth Summit on August 18th-19th at the Baton Rouge Shaw Center for the Arts. The event will kick off with an opening reception on August 17th at the Manship Theatre. This year will feature new speakers, along with panel discussions, that will address some of the critical issues facing Louisiana today: transportation and connectivity, coastal living, healthy communities, green building and sustainable design, and innovative school solutions. An online registration is now open and will be available through August. Day-of registration will then be available at the event.
