Renter's Insurance
Your belongings are rarely covered by your parents' insurance when you're off-campus. Check, but the best way to protect yourself is with renter's insurance.
Where do I get it? You can get renter's insurance from any major insurance company. Some companies, such as collegestudentinsurance.com, specialize in college rental insurance.
How much is it? You can get a plan for somewhere around $100 per year. Look into several different plans to find out what coverage best fits your needs and your price range.
What does it cover? Standard plans can protect you against theft, vandalism, fire & smoke, and storm damage. Some plans include coverage for flooding, studying abroad, and even accidental damage or temporary living costs. All personal items such as textbooks, laptops, cell phones, bicycles, cameras and mp3 players are protected.

Secure Your Apartment for the Holidays

Before you head home for Thanksgiving and December Break be sure to follow these guidelines to protect yourself and your belongings. The holidays are a prime time for would-be burglars to take advantage of students who have left town!
Hide all valuables, electronics, and other items of interest out of plain sight; or simply take them with you. Don't give anyone looking in a window reason to be interested in your belongings. Put jewelry, cameras, etc. in a desk or dresser drawer before you leave.
Let a neighbor know your holiday plans- If you have a trusted neighbor who will be around, let them know when you will be gone. Neighbors can be your eyes and ears for suspicious activity.
Lock all doors, windows, and secure access to fire escapes; these simple steps go a long way. Lock all deadbolts, use window restrictors, and make sure access to fire escapes is restricted from the street or other unauthorized entrances.
Keep a light on, or set a light on a timer. If it appears that someone is home, you are less likely to be burglarized.
These simple guidelines will help you enjoy your holiday and keep you from becoming a victim!

Searching for a Sublet
Going on co-op or a study abroad next semester? Here are some helpful tips to find a sublet, or to sublease your space.
- Review your lease to make sure subletting is allowed by your landlord.
- Look for sublets on Northeastern's Off Campus 'Message Boards' or post your own ad.
- Look for someone who has the means to pay your rent and utilities and who will not cause damage to the apartment under your name.
- When you have found a person to sublet your space, notify your landlord. They may ask for background information to make sure you have found a suitable replacement.
- Create a written agreement between all parties (you, the subleasor and the landlord) that clearly states the duration of the sublet, how much rent is owed and any other specific details. A written document will help avoid any misunderstandings.

Landlord Problems?
Having troubles with your landlord? Here are a few tips:
Notify your landlord of the problem. Whether it's a leaky toilet or mice, your landlord can't help you fix the problem if they don't know about it. Contact the person listed on the front page of your lease.
Get your apartment inspected. The best way to correct a problem or code violation is to get your apartment inspected by ISD. Ask your landlord first, but you can always contact ISD directly at 617-635-5300.
Ask Off Campus Student Services! We're here to help you with questions and concerns regarding landlords, leases, code violations, and more!

Dear Roaming Husky,
My friend has bedbugs in his apartment! We often visit one another and I'm afraid we might get them too! How do I know if I have them, and what should I do?
Sincerely,
Bugged Out
Dear Bugged Out,
The first thing you should do is have your apartment inspected by the Inspectional Services Department. They will be able to tell if your apartment has bedbugs. Look for blood spots, stains or dead bugs in places with crevices or near where you sleep. Look in your books, couches, desks or dressers (not just beds!). Never pick up furniture from the street as it could be infested, and be cautious when purchasing second-hand clothing or furniture. Routine cleaning of dirt, dust and clutter can help reduce the spread of bedbugs. If you or your roommates see any signs that bedbugs are present, immediately notify your landlord to have the apartment treated.
Sincerely,
Your Roaming Husky

Stay Warm, Save Money!
Caulk or weatherstrip windows to make sure cold air can't get in.
Open window shades in the day to let light (and heat) in, and insulated window shades will keep in heat at night.
After using the oven, leave the oven door ajar to warm your kitchen.
Don't block radiators with boxes, clothes, etc; this will block heat from spreading through your apartment.
Use a rolled up towel underneath your front door to keep heat in and keep drafts out.
Consider putting on a sweatshirt before turning up the heat-it's faster and cheaper!
