Responsible Partying
If you plan to host a party, keep these things in mind before inviting everyone you know:
- Whether your neighbors live next door or across the street, a loud party affects them too.
- Keep the noise down. Walk outside from time to time and observe the noise level.
- Inform your neighbors in advance and offer your phone number so they can call you to complain about the noise, before they call the police.
- Limit your guest list and only invite friends you trust. Open invitations almost always result with police at your door.
- Don't serve alcohol if you or ANY of your guests are under 21.
- If your name is on the lease, you will be held legally responsible if something goes wrong. Do not allow the party to get out of control or you'll face the consequences.
Consequences for hosting parties can be severe:
- Citations start at $50 per tenant for "disturbing the peace," and possible arrest.
- $200 fine for drinking in public, and possible arrest.
- $300 fine per tenant for an "unlicensed after hours party" and possible arrest.
Having a safe and responsible party is about being smart. Remember that when you live off-campus your actions affect not just other students, but families in the community. Be courteous and be responsible.
Smart students make great neighbors.

October 13 at 3pm @ 344 Curry Student Center. Meet with city and campus resources to discuss your rights and lease terms! Click here for more information! |
Security Deposits: Old/New
It's October. Do you know where last year's security deposit is? If there are no damages, your landlord must return your security deposit, in full, thirty days after the completion of the lease. If your landlord is charging you for any damages, they must supply you with a detailed list of any damages and necessary repairs. Written evidence must be provided in the form of invoices, bills, receipts or estimates.
As for the security deposit on your current apartment, your landlord is required to deposit it in a separate interest bearing account in a Massachusetts bank. By now, the landlord should have given you a receipt identifying the bank's name, address, account number, and the amount of the deposit. If not, ask. The lessee is also entitled to the interest issued by the bank where the deposit is held. It's October, do you know where your security deposits are?

Taste of Off Campus: A Hit!

Last month we hosted the first 'Taste of Off Campus' for off-campus students. Vendors provided free giveaways to introduce themselves, and students had the chance to meet face-to-face with local business owners, city and campus offices. Everyone received prizes at the door, and students played cornhole and ladderball to win door prizes and gift cards. Students walked away with IMAX tickets, CVS gift cards, Boloco burritos, pizza, and iced coffee! Thank you to all of the businesses and organizations who came out for this event. Say hello the next time you visit one of these businesses! Keep your eyes and ears open for other great upcoming events!

Dear Roaming Husky, I just moved off-campus, and I love my new apartment and the freedom having my own place! However, I've spent a lot less time on-campus than I used to. It's much harder to find out about events when you don't walk through campus all day and you're only there for class! How can I stay connected throughout the school year? Sincerely, Disconnected Dear Disconnected, There are many ways to stay connected even when you live off-campus! Our monthly newsletter is a great way to start. Subscribe to news@northeastern as well for a daily update of what's happening around campus. Browse the list of organizations on OrgSync for a club, team, or organization on-campus that you want to join! Check the campus calendar for seminars, exhibits, and events in the Northeastern Community. Or, get involved in your neighborhood with projects through the Community Service Office!
