Moving Out this Month?

Get that security deposit! Schedule a time with your landlord when you both can go through the apartment and make a collective decision about its condition. You are due 100% of your security deposit (plus interest) 30 days after your lease expires, unless there are damages.
Plan ahead! If you plan to use a moving or storage company/service, reserve them now! Check
our website for a list of companies.
Donate! Have too much stuff? Goodwill or The Salvation Army would be happy to help lighten your load! Or, sell it through the our message boards! If you're throwing out a lot of trash, discuss with your landlord your options for proper disposal.
Prioritize! Move out large items like a couch or table first; when moving in, leave small things like toiletries or silverware in the boxes until furniture is put into place. Label your boxes, and don't pack that tool kit too deep! You might need to put a table back together, or make a quick repair.

Explore! Get to know your new neighborhood! Grab a map, meet your neighbors, walk around and discover!Restaurant_Week

Turning Over a New Lease This Fall?
Here are some Tips and Tricks:
Empty Apartment

You're going to have to pack sometime, so it might as well be soon. Don't wait until the clock strikes 12 on August 31 to start throwing things in boxes. Pack winter gear, extra blankets, and old text books now. Ask your landlord how to properly dispose of extra garbage produced from the move out/packing process.

When do you have to be out? Do you have to vacate the night of August 31, or can you stay until 7:00AM the next morning? Talk to your landlord and work out an exact time you're expected to leave by.

Cancel your bills. If you're moving to a new apartment, call your electric, cable & internet companies and let them know you're canceling your subscriptions. Avoid getting bills for utilities you're not using.

When can you move into your new place? Can you move in a day early? If not, what time can you show up and expect your new apartment to be cleaned and be ready for you? Ask your new landlord to give you details, and if you're using a moving company, book a time that matches up.   Hubway

 SAFEnet Advisory: Online Security

northeastern police logo

Craigslist.com is just one site that has offerings for

non-existent jobs, apartments or stolen goods. Many of these sites have security information pages filled with personal safety tips, ways to avoid scams and fraud, and lists of prohibited or recalled items. Despite this, NUPD has had many reports from members of the university who have been scammed. These instances could have been avoided by following these tips: meet with the seller/buyer in a public place, tell friends or family where you're going, bring a friend, trust your instincts, don't wire money, and only make purchases that you can pay for using PayPal or a similar known source. When selling, be aware of the risks of questionable checks or money orders. Never give out personal information such as social security or credit card numbers. Avoid shipping and escrow services, and beware of Lottery scams: you can't win a lottery you didn't enter. A good alternative to craigslist for finding roommates or apartments online is Northeastern's Online Search Database. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Dear Roaming Husky...

Dear Roaming Husky
I am about to finish my current lease. Even though my roommates were friends, it was always such a hassle when we had to pay the cable & electric bills; we could never agree on how to split the cost! I am entering a new lease with new roommates, and hoped that you had some advice on how to deal with this issue.

--Sincerely, Split

Dear Split,

I suggest that talk to your roommates first thing in September. Make an agreement in writing with them as to how you plan on paying the bills. Decide if each person will pay for one bill in whole, or if the total cost will be split equally. State when everyone should pay by, and what will happen if someone doesn't pay on time or wastes electricity.
