Move Out Information
living room

As you prepare to move out, give your landlord 30 days written notice, even if your lease is expiring. You can also request your landlord's acknowledgement in writing for your records. Schedule an appointment with your landlord to jointly inspect the apartment so that you both agree on it's condition, which determines whether or not the landlord will return your security deposit. This way you can move out without any burden!

You should also reserve your moving truck now, since August and September are big moving months. If you wait too long you may find yourself out of luck!

Dear Roaming Husky...

My apartment has bed bugs. I also noticed couches and beds by the dumpster from other units. I think my entire building may have a bed bug problem. What should I do?

                            --Infected

Dear Infected,

You should call the the city's Inspectional Services Department (617-635-5300) and have them inspect your apartment immediately. Inform your landlord that you've noticed the tossed couches and beds. Urge him to have the whole building inspected.

Bike Friday

This year the city has been sponsoring some great bike-related programs. One of the coolest is Bike Friday!

'
The ride starts in several locations on the fringes of the city, all converging on City Hall. At City Hall there's a bike expo with free Boloco and local bike shops showing off the latest gear and doing demos. Check it out!

We hope everyone's summer is going well! The biggest thing to keep in mind for the month of July is move-out is just around the corner. As you organize your move out responsibilities, don't forget to enjoy the city. There's a lot going on in July, especially on the Fourth! And the Summester program is pumping out great events, be sure to give them a look too!

Things to do on July 4th

July 4th is a big deal in Boston, and given how many major moments in the American Revolution happened here, how could it not be? Don't miss out! There are a lot of fun and free things to do.

On The Fourth the Hatch Shell opens at 9:00 a.m. with general

music and festivities the whole day. The Boston Pops begin at 8:00 p.m. At 9:30, they launch into the 1812 Overture followed by the firework display! It's a nationally televised event so it's definitely worth the trip.

Keep in mind the area is absolutely packed every year. A good place to see the fireworks while avoiding the crowd is The Museum of Science.
There's a back patio right on the Charles with picnic benches and a great view.

Grill Safety
It always pays to keep these simple tips in mind while grilling!

ˇ LP Grills are not permitted inside or on balconies above the first floor of any apartment building
ˇ Keep the grill in an open area away from buildings, dry leaves or brush. Be aware of the wind blowing sparks.
ˇ Place grill on a level surface away from low hanging trees, deck railings, siding or any combustible materials
ˇKeep a fire extinguisher within reach.
ˇ Use long handled barbecue tools and flame retardant mitts.
ˇ Do not wear loose clothing.
ˇ NEVER leave children or pets unattended near a hot grill.

Read the full Grill Safety Brochure here.
Beaches on the T!

Feeling trapped in the city? Need some sun and sand? There are plenty of T-accessible beaches near Boston that make for a nice day-trip:

Boston Harbor Islands are a just a ferry ride away (departing from the New England Aquarium). These lesser-known gems have a beautiful view of Boston and generally low foot traffic. Spectacle Island is the biggest destination; click here for more about it.

Carson Beach, South Boston Take the Red Line to the UMass stop to get to this convenient beach. Though there's not much in the way of surf, it's the closest and cheapest place to get some sun and sand. Click here for more.

Revere Beach It's the oldest public beach in the U.S! Take the Blue Line to the Wonderland stop to access this one. Click here for more.

Singing Beach, Manchester-By-The-Sea You'll have to hop on the Rockport commuter line then walk 15 minutes to get to this quiet beach, but it's made up for by the distinct squeak the sand makes when you walk on it (hence the name). Click here for more.

SAFEnet Advisory- Summer Security Tips

FOR THOSE LIVING IN THE SOUTH END AND FENWAY The BPD just issued a special warning concerning break-ins.

Before leaving for vacation or even a long weekend remember to take simple security precautions to secure your apartment and to review your own personal safety.SAFEnet Crime never takes a vacation, crime can and does occur at any time.

SECURING YOUR RESIDENCE: 1. Secure windows (and doors) and use window riser restrictor devices, for the added level of security they offer. 2. Use a timer to leave a light and radio on, giving the impression the apartment is occupied. SAFEGUARDING PROPERTY: 1.Secure laptops with cabling and use tracking and recovery software. 2. Never leave small items such as laptops, Ipods, cameras and cell phones within reach of an open window. 3. Engrave items such as external drives and DVD players. Consider registering them with an on-line service. Keep documentation like serial numbers, make, models, etc. in a safe and accessible location for use when needed.
CELEBRATE JULY 4TH SAFELY: Summer means picnics, barbecues, parades and fireworks displays. Summer also means an increase in injuries from backyard grills, bonfires and fireworks. The best way to safely enjoy this 4th of July is to watch a public firework display conducted by professionals. Enjoy your summer, use common sense and stay safe!
