Dear Roaming Husky...
| |
I live in Mission Hill right now, and I'm moving to the South End in September. None of my friends have a car big enough to take my couches, bed etc. and all my relatives are in California. How do I get my stuff into the new apartment?
-A to B
| |
Dear AB,
Relax, there are plenty of options, depending on your budget. The easiest way to do it would be to hire a moving company (there's plenty listed on our site). They'll take care of everything for you, all you have to do is watch.UHaul is a more affordable option (the Boston service is listed in the link above). You can either rent a van, trailer or a truck, and load in your stuff. It's also a good idea to book your moving company/truck now, because September 1 is move-in day across Boston!

SoWa Market
| |
The SoWa Market, a street fair tucked away in Boston's South End, has all stripes and colors of local, organic and homemade wares. One section is a farmer's market, with a good variety of food and flowers. The art/fashion section features popular fashion designers like Jon Wye and novelty goods like lobster rope welcome mats. There are plenty of awesome art galleries peppered in as well.
Many of the stands are a bit out of the college price range, but here are a few you can tackle without breaking the bank.
When Pigs Fly Bakery - A huge array of interesting breads, from apple cinnamon to Russian sauerkraut to red pepper hummus with garlic and sesame seeds. At $6.00 a (massive) loaf and plenty of free samples, this is definitely worth a look.
Thai Crafts - Stepping inside the Thai Crafts tent is like the old days, when Europeans sailed to Asia and brought back crazy fabrics and spices for aristocrats. This vendor goes to a village in Thailand and brings back wood carvings and jewelry made by villagers, and sells it for cheap. You'll find scarves, bracelets, necklaces, wallets and wood sculptures, all hand crafted and under $20.
Pestos - It's a simple name for a simple concept. This stand sells 5 or 6 custom pesto blends like gorgonzola & fig and pumpkin. They're all amazing. If anything, it's worth grabbing free samples.
Grillo's Pickles - One dollar gets you two pickle spears, normal or spicy; kind of an odd idea for a food cart, but don't knock it until you've tried it.
Every Sunday through October, 10 - 4 p.m. 460 Harrison Avenue.

Cheap Eats Outside
| It's starting to feel like summer, and one of the best ways to enjoy summer in Boston is taking a meal in the open air. Here are a few places around Boston with outdoor seating and college friendly prices.
The Church Of Boston - Nestled in the Fens, this restaurant has a comfort food heavy menu, a lot of seafood, and plenty of 9 to 12 dollar dishes. It also acts at a concert venue, with live music every night at 9:00 p.m. 69 Kilmarnock St. Boston MA
Trident Cafe - Just off Mass Ave on Newbury Street, this Bookstore/Cafe combo has a good breakfast and lunch menu with all sorts of specialty coffees and teas. The six or so tables they have outside are a good place to kick off a shopping spree or just people/dog watch.338 Newbury Street, Boston MA
Savant Project - This Mission Hill staple has outdoor seating with a twist. It's behind the restaurant, in a fenced in patio. It has a small but diverse menu, trivia nights and live performances. 1625 Tremont Street, Boston MA

Trash 2Treasure a success!
|
We'd like to say thanks to everyone who added their move-out leftovers to the Trash2Treasure bins! Over the past two years, the program has raised $5,000 for local charities and was able to donate close to 400 pounds of food to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Though the results from this year's effort have yet to be tallied, program founder Dan Abrams expects a greater outcome, due in part to extra help from faculty and staff.
