Springtime at Northeastern

Hello off campus students!!

Spring has finally arrived and who can believe that there are only a few weeks left in the semester?

StressedWith finals quickly approaching it's easy to put the apartment/ sublet search on the bottom of the to-do list, but make sure these items are priorities now, saving you headaches and problems later down the line.

If you're looking to sublet, visit our message boards! It's a great way to ensure you're living with fellow off-campus Huskies.

Feeling out of the campus loop? Check out the upcoming Breakfast Club events, community meetings and other local happenings listed below. They're a great way to get involved in your local community!

With the weather warming up, be on the look out for many outdoor events in the upcoming weeks - whether it be the opening of the swan boats on April 16, or the world-famous Boston Marathon on April 18!

Car

And as a friendly reminder for all of you with cars: street sweeping resumes this week.
If you park on the street, check the schedules. Don't get towed! You can sign up for NoTow email reminders from the city here.

From everyone here in the office we wish you good luck with your final exams or co-op. Hope to see you around the city at any of the upcoming events!

Have The Facts!

by Steve Stuart

Now that we're in April, chances are you've found your apartment for September. But if you haven't yet, don't panic - check our apartment and sublet database to keep your search going!

If you have your apartment locked down, you can start thinking about your game plan for move-in. One of the most important things you need to do is make sure that your apartment gets inspected by Boston Inspectional Services Department within 45 days of your move-in.  Make sure you're aware of your rights. All appliances should be up to date and in working order, bathrooms should be free of leaks, no infestations, etc; all of which is the responsibility of the landlord.
Check Mark
Be sure to stop by the Off Campus Office in 226 Curry Student Center during business hours to pick up a ton of information on your tenant rights. Ask for your Housing Code Checklist, Apartment Condition Checklist and Student Handbook, as well as more information on different things that you should do upon move-in.

Be prepared for September as soon as possible!

Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) meeting on proposed NU dormitory this Thursday

Over the past 6 months, Northeastern University, the BRA and the surrounding communities have been in discussion about a proposed dormitory to be built in the footprint of the current YMCA gymnasium. The project would add 700+ beds in a format similar to International Village.

Please come and join the discussion and learn about the project as the debate moves to Mission Hill for all residents to participate. The meeting will take place this Thursday, April 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Center at Mission Church, 1545 Tremont Street on Mission Hill. We strongly encourage students to attend. It would be great to have a stronger student voice.

Mission Hill Crime Committee Meetings celebrate 28th year Anniversary
Party

On Thursday, March 31, 2011 the Mission Hill Crime Committee celebrated it's 28th anniversary. The committee is the oldest of its kind in Boston and has been working tirelessly over the past years to improve safety and prevent crime in the Mission Hill community.

Meetings are a venue to voice concern about crime in the community or simply a means to be current on all actions taken to make Mission Hill safer. If you have a problem or have spotted suspicious activity, bring it to the meeting!

Meetings are the last Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Mission Hill Church Music Room. Please feel free to accompany CAs and attend these meetings with us.

BUSTED

In September, NUPD caught two buyers coming out of a Tremont Street liquor store -- an Ohio State student with a fake ID buying for an underage NU student and an NU student with a fake ID buying for himself and two others from NU, all underage. The fake-ID holders were summoned to court and fined; all five NU students were referred to OSCCR.

A Northeastern University Police Department investigation has since resulted in two court-ordered penalties and four disciplinary referrals, as well as the suspension of a Roxbury liquor store's license for 10 days.

The bottom line: Don't try it!

CA Spotlight: Steve Stuart

Who am I: I'm a middler majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Political Science. I've spent the last two years on Mission Hill and I'm the Executive Vice President of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.  My favorite part of living on Mission Hill is going to Flann's.

Why I'm a CA: I became a Community Ambassador to learn about tenant rights and the resources the city provides to help tenants with sub-standard living conditions.

My CA advice: Know your rights. I'm currently in an ongoing battle over the dishwasher in the apartment; at least once a month it floods the kitchen. Through being a CA I've learned landlords are required to maintain all appliances in an apartment -- in this case, the dishwasher. When my landlord failed to do so, I had to call the city several times to have the apartment inspected by Inspectional Services before the landlord eventually fixed it.
