Off Campus Student Special!!

 Dear Roaming Husky...

I live in a ground floor apartment and as the weather gets warmer, I like to keep my windows open. However, I'm concerned about break-ins. Is there anything I can do?

-Dangerously Temperate

Dear Temperate,

A cool breeze is often better than AC, and cheaper too. There's no reason to sacrifice it. A good way to ensure window security is to use riser restrictors on all your windows. That way, you can keep the windows open, but not wide enough that someone could climb in. When you're in the room, you can release the restrictors for more fresh air. You can find restrictors at many hardware stores, or simply pop wooden dowels of the correct length in the window track.

 Still Looking?For Rent

It's not too late to locate an apartment for fall! The season is still alive and kicking. Use NU's Apartment Database to find a place (we don't list the more nefarious realtors in the area, so it's a safer search) or to find a roommate. If you're looking for a sublet, use the Message Board

 Summer Subletting

Going on Co-op out of state? Graduating?  If your plans are heading you into (or out of) an apartment, subletting may be the right option for you. Submit your post on our MESSAGE BOARDS to connect with other NU students who are out there looking for what you can offer!  Our  housing database HERE is the easiest and safest way to connect with other NU students.

Be sure you have your landlord's permission before you sublet your space, and choose your subletter wisely.  Your name is still on the lease, and you are still responsible if your subletter doesn't pay the rent or causes damage. Remember, security deposits are not refunded until the lease expires.

Create a written agreement between all parties involved (landlord, tenant, subletter) to make sure everyone is held accountable. Don't get stuck paying for someone else's rent or damages!

What To Do With Landlord Troubles

Are you or someone you know experiencing problems with the landlord? Since most students live in areas that are highly populated by other students, unfortunately some landlords take advantage of this fact.Don't let that happen to you! If your landlord:
  • Does not respond when maintenance is needed
  • Refuses to fix a broken appliance
  • Hasn't provided window locks, or safety devices aren't functioning....

Check out Boston's many resources geared towards student tenants, and familiarize yourself with the City of Boston's student page.  You should also know about:

Rental Housing Resource Center - Whether you're renting your first apartment, have questions about your lease, security deposit, or haggling with your landlord, these experts are ready to offer advice and a web page just for students. www.cityofboston.gov/rentalhousing/

Inspectional Services Department (ISD) - Just because you're a student doesn't mean you should tolerate substandard housing. ISD enforces health and safety codes & requirements.  To check if your apartment has been "certified" or request an inspection, go here:

Crime         Crime Watch Tips

In recent weeks there have been several assaults and vehicle break-ins in the local neighborhood. For a comprehensive survey of crime in the area, use CrimeReports.com.  To prevent break-ins:BPDLOGO

  • Park your car in well-lit areas or off the street.
  • Ask if off-street parking is available for tenants.
  • Don't encourage a potential thief...
  • GPS systems, iPods, laptops and purses left in plain sight beg to be stolen!

Parker Street can be a hotbed of activity on weekends, and there are often vandalism and broken-out car windows reported. Respect people's property when you're walking home, and REPORT vandalism when you see it.

To prevent assaults: with Spring finally here, you'll probably be out and about more.  Enjoy your evenings on the town, but don't forget to keep your eyes open! Walk in groups; if you have to walk home alone, use the safety escort van from Snell Library. Keep electronics in your pocket and your eyes/ears open for suspicious activity.
