Dear Roaming Husky...

I've had a great experience with my apartment, but my landlord seems to burst in whenever he wants. It's usually awkward and feels like an invasion of my privacy. Is there anything I can do?
--Invaded
Dear Invaded,
The landlord should provide "reasonable notice" before entering your apartment, unless it's an emergency. He can enter for three reasons: for repairs, to show it to others, or to inspect it (unless otherwise stated in your lease). If your landlord isn't adhering to notice for these reasons, voice your concern!

Become A Community Ambassador
If being a voice on campus and in the community is something for you, we are now recruiting Community Ambassadors for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Being Social yet Responsible
Socializing is an important part of college life. However, when that results in loud parties and intoxicated students, Northeastern students become unwelcome members of the community.
Being Social, yet Responsible is one way for students to keep good relations between the historic neighborhoods they are a part of and the university they attend.
3 Quick Party Tips:
1. Be a sober host: Sober hosts can prevent a lot of things from getting out of control, such as noise level, and over intoxication .
2. Give neighbors your number: Ask neighbors to contact you directly if the noise gets too loud. This can prevent police action and the problem is dealt with quicker so both parties are happy.
3. Make sure your guests are okay: As host, you're responsible for a guest's actions even after they leave your
home, as outlined in the Social Host Liability Law.
Want to know more?
Off Campus Student Services, OPEN, OSCCR, NUPD, BPD, and NU Community Affairs are hosting a program on March 14th at 6pm in 444CSC. This fair-style program will provide information on how to be respectful in our neighborhoods surrounding campus if you choose to attend/ host a social event. There will be a ton of great information, free food and free stuff!

St. Patty's Day In Boston
Because "everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day," those with or without Irish ancestry all love Boston's St. Patrick's Day Parade. It's listed as the second largest parade in the country, being viewed by nearly 600,000 to one million people every year. The parade takes place in "Southie" (South Boston, the most Irish section of Boston) and travels between the Broadway T station and Andrew Square. This year's parade takes place on Sunday, March 20th, at 1:00 pm, and is T accessible by taking the Red line to the Broadway station. Click here for a list of restaurants and pubs serving traditional Irish food as well.
Fun Facts about St. Patrick's Day Holiday
St. Patrick's Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. In Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair. There has been a St. Patrick's Day parade in Boston, Massachusetts since 1737. The Irish flag is green, white and orange. The green symbolizes the people of the south, and orange, the people of the north. White represents the peace that brings them together as a nation.

Rental Inspections
Is your apartment "up to code?" All rental-housing units in Boston are required to have inspections to ensure that they comply with the Massachusetts State Sanitary Code. Boston has an Inspectional Services Department that is charged with enforcing this code. As a tenant it is easy to check the status of your apartment; just visit the City of Boston website and search to see if your apartment is "certified" by the city.
What should you do if you believe there are code violations in your apartment? Inform your landlord IN WRITING of suspected problems and request that they be fixed. If not resolved, call Inspectional Services at (617) 635-5300. Common code violations include:
· Insufficient heat or hot water
· Windows that are not weather-tight
· Insect or rodent infestation
· Non-working locks and doors
· Non-functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
More can be found online at the Housing Division of ISD webpage.
Bed bugs are becoming a common problem in many cities across the country and college apartments are more susceptible than most. To protect yourself and your apartment from bed bugs, don't pick up used furniture. Be aware that bed bugs can be transported on clothes, furniture and other personal items. The only way to get rid of bed bugs is to have them exterminated by a professional exterminator. It is the responsibility of your landlord to have the bed bugs removed and if the landlord fails to do so, contact Inspectional Services immediately to have the infestation resolved.
