Furniture and Ride Share Options, Take Advantage!

Many students use our message boards

to find sublets and roommates. But don't forget about the Ride Share/Furniture options. Don't throw out your

furniture

before putting up a post. Your next door neighbor could be in need!

Need a ride

somewhere? Check the message board. See where people are going, and if you have an extra spot in your car, post it. One more head for gas money never hurts.

Dear Roaming Husky...

I'm in a media bind. My roommates and I hardly ever watch cable and watch most of our T.V. on our computers. We still want it for the occasional game. Is there any sort of reduced rate? I'm definitely not using it enough to get my money's worth.

-Budget Minded

Dear Budget Minded,

Comcast actually offers a special reduced rate for Northeastern students. You should check out the Community tab on the myNEU portal and find the "Comcast Advantage Program." NU students are eligible for a $25 rebate for each service order. For example, for High Speed Internet, Telephone and Cable T.V. you can save $75 by filling out an online form.

Happy savings,

Your Roaming Husky

Don't get pushed around!

The apartment hunting season is upon us. Take these precautions as you look around:

 1)     Do not rush into signing a lease: No apartment will disappear over night and do not let a realtor pressure your decision. Take the time to review the lease and addendum to ensure you agree with all the terms before signing.

2)     Many realtors will require a broker's fee, (usually equal to one months rent) but may use this as leverage to take an apartment "off the market." Too often students pay the fee before having their application accepted and lease in hand. Get all transactions in writing.

3)     Ask current tenants about the apartment and landlord as they know best. Ask why they are moving out and how much they pay for utilities. Is the landlord responsive? These are all important questions to ask before signing a lease. If the tenants say their dishwasher has been broken for six months and they haven't heard from the landlord, keep looking.

Happy Hunting and Know your rights!

Apartment Hunting Fair!

Every year we host an apartment fair and invite reputable area realtors in to showcase their properties. Come to the fair, meet some realtors and find your next apartment!

Snow in the City

Will the snow ever stop? Be aware of Boston's snow emergency notices, especially if you drive. Snow emergencies will be announced through the radio, news, and online at http://www.cityofboston.gov. You can also sign up for ALERT Boston, an emergency notification service that sends you an email or text informing you of any emergency situations in the city. Sign up here.

The City of Boston suggests:

-Do not park within 20 feet of an intersection, in crosswalks, in front of fire hydrants or on any street stating "Emergency Snow Artery."

-All cars in university lots need to be moved to Columbus or Renaissance Garage during snow emergencies.

-Streets around Northeastern University have a parking ban during a snow emergency include Columbus Ave., Hemenway St., Huntington Ave., Massachusetts Ave., and Ruggles St. Search which streets have parking bans by neighborhood here. There is also a list of alternate parking at the bottom of each neighborhood search.

SAFEnet Advisory: Internet Fraud

SAFEnet

The risk of internet fraud, schemes and thefts are constant in today's society. Here are some common sense practices which will help you avoid financially costly and emotionally exhausting experiences:

Use a good, strong password. Combinations of numbers, letters (Upper and lower case) and special characters are best. Don't use something easy to guess like a birthday or phone numbers.

Know where you are going. A fraudulent web address can be discovered by rolling the mouse over the link and seeing the real address at the lower left corner of the monitor; when done utilizing the site, close the browser, especially on a public computer.

Bank and credit card statements have a tremendous amount of information that is potentially harmful. Shred documents, statements and receipts, including the return envelopes with "Customer Tracking" barcodes.

If you think your accounts or passwords have been compromised: For
NU systems (MyNeu, Lotus notes, etc) contact NU IT at 617-373-4357 for password or other assistance;
for non-NU accounts contact that organization directly for assistance. For an incident involving a theft of money or identity fraud contact NUPD at 617-373-2121.
