Roaming Husky
Dear Roaming Husky,
Now that it's winter, our apartment is getting colder and colder. I am concerned, not only about keeping warm, but about saving money on my heating bill. What quick and affordable ways can I accomplish this?
-- Shivering Saver
Dear Shivering,
Set your thermostat no higher than 68 degrees when you are home and lower the temperature at night or when you are not at home. This will ensure optimal home heating and save energy. Weatherize your home by caulking and weather-stripping all doors and windows. Also, use locks on your windows to make them tighter and draft resistant. You can buy window insulation kits for under $20 at most hardware stores.

Cooking on a Budget
Cabbage and Sweet Potato Soup
Food costs are always a concern and after buying all your gifts this holiday season, your wallet may be stretched. Here is a hearty soup for those cold winter days. The sweet potatoes and carrots mellow the cabbage and make a smooth, comforting soup.
Ingredients 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
1/2 head cabbage, coarsely chopped
1 cup chopped carrots
1 pound turkey bratwurst, sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
3 cups chicken broth
Directions Place the sweet potatoes, cabbage, and carrots into a slow cooker, then place the bratwurst slices on top of the vegetables. Sprinkle with the salt, thyme, rosemary, and pepper. Pour the wine and chicken broth over the vegetables. Cook on low heat until the sweet potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, 5 to 6 hours.

2011: A Fresh Start?
New Year's Resolution #1: Get Involved
Get involved in different activities and programs on campus. Why not? By joining a student organization, or any other activity on campus, you meet different people, expand your social resources and get more variety out of your college experience. After class, heading home and napping the day away may feel like the obvious choice, but taking the time for extracurricular activities can be far more rewarding in the end. NU is packed with a diverse array of clubs, organizations, and intramurals that cover many interests. Enjoy sports? Check out the intramural programs at the Marino Center. Get a group of friends together for a basketball team in the rec league. Want to give back? Check out the numerous community service organizations on campus, or visit the Community Service office. Want to work on professional skills and leadership abilities? Check out the Lead 360 program in the Student Activities office, or get information on leadership organizations like Student Government (SGA). If you want to get up and move while learning something new, register for NU-Opps (non-credit instructional programs) in ballroom dancing, yoga, martial arts and swimming, among others! Registration ends January 20th. Getting involved on campus comes down to your personal interests and hobbies. There is something for everyone, all you need to do is get out there and sign up! Check out the Student Activities webpage at: http://www.northeastern.edu/studentactivities to find the club or organization that is right for you. Bring in the new year with a with a new experience! |

New Year's Resolution #2: Budget Better
Wallet suddenly feeling a little light? Has your holiday spending caught up with you? Money leaving the bank account faster than it's coming in? Managing a budget is an essential skill to develop while in college, but the hardest part about living on a budget is sticking to it! Once you commit, you are well on your way to wise spending and saving for your future.
A budget is a simple written plan outlining how you should spend your money. Step #1: Save your receipts and examine where your money goes. You may be shocked to see how much ends up at Taco Bell or Symphony Convenience. Step #2: Once you outline your current spending habits, adjust them to fit your estimated income. There are many different budgeting worksheets available online for students like the option found here.
Step #3: Discounts! Services like Student Advantage, Student Market, EDU.com, Stubex.com, and 1800Student.com can help you trim back without giving up. You can also get your Student Advantage card number printed on your Husky ID for free, so that it is always on hand. Step #4: John Hancock will be hosting a "Saving and Investing" workshop for NU students on February 15 @ 6pm. To register for this event go to www.neu.edu/alumni/programs/financial

New Year's Resolution #3: Healthy Living
The life of a college student may not lend itself to the healthiest eating habits. Here are a few tips to help avoid the Ramen habit and try something new. 1. Choose the right foods: When the dining hall isn't two floors below you, it is easy to fall into the trap of take-out food. Take-out food is often high in fat and the servings tend to be far larger than needed. Spend a little time each week to prepare a grocery list and cook your own meals. You'll save money and eat better! 2. Exercise: You have access to the Marino Center, even if you are on co-op or living off-campus. Before heading back to your apartment for the night, stop in and spend an hour. Regular exercise will lead to increased energy throughout the day and a healthier lifestyle. Plus, it just feels good. 3. Manage stress: Classes, holidays and a new job can all be very stressful. Stress can lead to disruptions in sleep and changes in eating, which can all influence your mental and physical health. Try to organize your thoughts and obligations and approach them one at a time rather than all at once. Take a little "me time" each day to relax and prepare for the work ahead. 4. Prepare for the weather: Winter is here and anyone who has walked down Huntington Avenue in February knows it's cold. Layering up is a good way to fight off that lovely Atlantic breeze. And, of course, don't forget gloves and a hat! |
