Dear Roaming Husky...

"When is the landlord allowed to start showing our apartment for next year? My landlord recently asked if we were planning to re-sign our lease for next year. She said if we do not respond by the end of the month, she'll start showing the apartment. It's only November! Can she do this?"
- Pressured
Dear Pressured,
The city does not have any ordinance specifying the timeframe that a landlord is allowed to show their property to prospective tenants. They are allowed to do this at their discretion, however, they must provide reasonable notice. Reasonable notice is not defined by law, but reasonable notice must be agreed upon by both parties. Talk to your landlord and voice your concerns. If you do not feel ready to make a decision at this time, you should tell her so.

Prepare to Sublet!
Going on Co-op out of state? Coming back to Boston from either studying abroad or a co-op? If your plans are heading you into (or out of) an off campus apartment, subletting may be the right option for you. First, decide where you would like to live, your monthly budget, and exactly how long you will need housing. Doing research on what is available is essential. Check out the MESSAGE BOARDS to connect with other NU students, on NU's off campus housing on-line HERE.
When looking at sublets, find a place where you feel safe and make sure you meet all potential roommates. Get an estimate of utility costs beyond the rent. Finally, before you make your decision, make sure the Landlord is agrees to you subletting, and ask to sign a sublet agreement. (Remember, there is no such thing as a "sublet fee"). For more help, write us at offcampus@neu.edu or visit 226 CSC.

Citizen Alert

In the past month, there have been numerous break ins and robberies in the areas around Northeastern University. The Boston Police Department (BPD) has released some tips to keep you and your belongings safe.
- ALWAYS lock your doors, whether you are home or not. Check that windows are locked and secured, especially windows or doors near fire escapes and balconies.
- When not at home, leave a light on or the TV or radio.
- Become familiar with who lives in your building so you know belongs and able to report suspicious activity.
- When walking home at night, you and your possessions could be vulnerable. Secure your possessions, keep iPods and cell phones out of sight. Remain alert to your surroundings until you are safely at your residence.
These simple precautions will increase the likeliness that you, your apartment and your belongings will be safe. Check out www.bpdnews.com for news updates, or follow up to the minute crime reports here.

Homecoming: November 15-20

Northeastern celebrates Homecoming Week 2010! Your Community Ambassadors urge you to support every team and event throughout the week.
From athletic events to the Mayor of Huntington Avenue debates, Homecoming 2010 is packed with Husky Pride and offers many events where we can flaunt our red and black!
Northeastern students come from many backgrounds but wherever we go, domestically or internationally, we're all part of the greater Northeastern community. This year's theme, "There's No Place Like Northeastern" pays tribute to some of the amazing places our students are tied to, while highlighting our common attribute: we are all Huskies! Showcase the pride you have in Northeastern by participating in the Homecoming Court, the Mayor of Huntington Avenue, the Husky Decorating and banner contests, and so much more!
Look for more information from your CA's. We will be organizing groups to attend events and games throughout the week to cheer on our HUSKIES! For the complete authority on Homecoming events: www.northeastern.edu/studentactivities/homecoming.html |

TRACE Program The Boston Police Department has collaborated with the FBI to create a program designed to assist in identifying stolen property.
TRACE allows stolen property information to be shared by law enforcement agencies around the country, and increases the likelihood, that when an article has been stolen, it can be returned to the rightful owner. And it's FREE!
Sign-up and log into www.Trace.com/BPD to add your valuable items to a personal database. The database will store identifiable traits, like serial numbers, of your cell phone, laptop, jewelry, or other valuables. Too often when items are stolen, owners don't have such records, so there is no way for law enforcement to return stolen property if found.
You can also use TRACE to check if items you are about to purchase are stolen as well. Check items you want to buy from a 3rd party (such as Craig's List or EBay) against the list of known stolen items. If a deal is too good to be true, it probably is; it's a good chance the item might be stolen.
If you don't want to use TRACE, it is a good idea to make your own list of valuable items and note identifiable features and serial numbers. In the event of a robbery, you'll have a complete catalog of missing items to share with police.
