Dear Roaming Husky,
"I have just moved into my first off campus apartment. I've heard from friends that we should have ISD come and inspect the apartment. When we mentioned this to our landlord he said that it was not necessary because he had looked over the apartment before we moved in and nothing was wrong. Should I still get an inspection?
- Off Campus Newbie
Dear 'Newbie',
Yes, the city requires an inspection everytime new tenants move in. A certified Housing Inspection Agent is the only person who can determine whether your apartment meets state health and safety codes, and is pest free. It is in your best interest to have the apartment inspected. Click Here to get an inspection request form.

SAFEnet Advisory - Street Smarts for Boston and Campus
There have been reports of breaking and entering into dwellings around campus. Intruders have been gaining access through open windows, air conditioners, and unlocked doors, and have been using fire escapes as their route. Here are some safety tips to help protect you and your belongings:
ON CAMPUS: Consider using the Personal Safety Escort Service, available 24 hrs a day; be aware of the Emergency Assistance phones located throughout campus; program NUPD into your cell phone: 617-373-2121 for routine calls, 617-373-3333 for Police, Fire or Medical emergencies.
OFF CAMPUS: Keep apartment doors closed and secured at all times; use a deadbolt, keyed lock and peephole, don't buzz anyone in that you don't know, use window riser restrictors, and know your neighbors.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Avoid showing or flashing money; wait for trains and buses with other people; stay away from commotions or fights; be aware of pickpocketing and make sure your backpack is fully closed.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS: Trust your instincts; stay in well lit areas at night; use well traveled areas, avoid alleys and shortcuts; walk with others when possible; carry your purse close to your body, carry a wallet in a front pants pocket; learn the area, what stores are open late, where the police and fire stations are located.
BOSTON POLICE 911: Cell phone users should store 1-617-343-4911 for direct access to the Boston police 911 system. |
