GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH:

Air Conditioner

Stay cool without
waste

Yes, there is still one more month of this heat! While it is easy to forget about conserving energy while you are trying to stay cool, there have been power outages across the city this summer.

Here are some ways you can keep your place cool, and save some money on your electric bill as well!

 * Turn off your air conditioner when nobody is home.

 * If your AC unit has a thermostat, keep it at a high temperature.

* Make sure all windows and doors are closed and sealed while the AC is running.

* Set up a series of fans to circulate the air and allow for more efficient cooling while the AC is running.

Dear Roaming Husky....

Dear Roaming Husky

"This Summer, my apartment has been hotter than 100 degrees. Last night I came home and it was 105.  I have an in-wall air conditioning unit that blows out cold air but it can take HOURS to get my apartment to cool down. I called my landlord, but when he came to check, he said it felt fine to him, so there was nothing he could do. I am starting to worry for my health especially with more heat predicted.  What can I do?"

 - Clammy
----------------------------------------------------------

Dear 'Clammy',

Landlords are only required to provide a stove and oven for any apartment, but if they provide any other appliance they must be maintained in good working condition.
Since the AC unit was provided by the landlord when you moved in, it must be in working condition, and the landlord is obligated to either replace it or fix it. If not, you can call Inspectional Services at 617-635-5322 and ask them to inspect the problem. If they find a violation, they will serve notice to the landlord to fix it!

SMART MOVER TIPS:
   Are you ready?

moving van As September 1st draws closer, keep these tips in mind!

PREPARE NOW:
* Plan Ahead!  Reserve a moving truck or service now! Inform the post office, electric and cable company, and anyone else that you are moving to a new location.

* Drop the excess baggage! Avoid moving things you don't really need. It's time consuming and physically demanding.  If you don't use it now, you probably won't use it later. Donate old clothes & furniture to a charity.

* Be smart about your moving service! If you hire a moving company, make sure that service has a good reputation; experience will save you time and money.

* Get all the help you can! Recruit friends and family to make the process go smoother and faster.

* Make a survival kit! Pack a small bag of essentials to keep with you, including tools, to make the transition and first night in your new home smoother.

MOVING DAY:
* Box it up! Have plenty of packing tape on hand to seal the boxes.

* Prioritize! Not everything you pack needs to be unpacked immediately.  Use labels to designate the priority of different boxes, and mark what room they belong in to make unpacking more efficient.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE:
* Function First! Unpack large items first, then worry about the accessories.

* Get to know your neighborhood! Spend a few days exploring the area; locate the nearest supermarket, laundromat, bank, etc.  Go to http://www.cityofboston.gov/calendar to learn about activities going on in your new neighborhood.

* Meet your neighbors! Introduce yourself and be a good neighbor!

Public Safety

Bicycle & Laptop Theft, and Purse Snatching

Recently there has been an increase in the number of street robberies and thefts of bicycles and laptops in Boston, and some of these incidents have occurred near or on our campus.  Northeastern Police offer the following suggestions to stay safe and protect your valuables.

1) Be aware of your surroundings when walking alone, especially after dark and when there are few pedestrians in the area. Ipods, cell phones and purses can be easily snatched by a person running up from behind or riding past on a bicycle.

2) Avoid walking alone in the city and always use well-traveled and well-lit routes when walking to and from campus.

3) Familiarize yourself with the Personal Safety Escort Services; they provide both ON CAMPUS and HOURLY OFF-CAMPUS Safety Escort Services for getting to your off-campus apartment after dark.

4) Report suspicious activity on or near the campus to Northeastern Police immediately.

5) If you think someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street or walk into an open store, restaurant or residence hall.

6) Use a rigid U-shaped lock to secure your bicycle. Chain and cable locks can be easily defeated with bolt cutters carried in a backpack.

7) Don't leave your laptop unattended in the food court or the library, even for a few minutes.

8) Be aware of the locations of Campus Blue-Light Phones.
