Moving? Leaving this summer?

 Moving Day

You may think it's okay to contact moving/storage companies at the last minute, but in fact, you should really make your reservations early! Students are moving in and out through the summer, so things can get a little backed-up for many companies. Don't get caught in the middle of all the chaos! Check out some moving/storage companies HERE and make sure to reserve your slot!

Dear Roaming Husky

 Take a Break!

"My lease runs out in four months but I want to move now. Can I break my lease?"
- Anxious Husky

Dear Anxious
You may break your lease, but not without penalty. If you break the lease, the landlord can hold you responsible for any unpaid rent under the lease and/or for the costs associated with finding a tenant to replace you. Consider if it's worth these fees before you decide to move!"

Good luck,
Your Roaming Husky

Keepin' It Cool

Survey Says...

We asked you how much you know about your renter's ISDChracterrights, and this is what you told us:

- 94% know that the landlord must provide functional smoke alarms
- 86% know that "no more than four" undergrads can rent an apartment together in Boston
- 77% know you can be charged a fee when rent is late

BUT -

- 88% are unfamiliar with the Rental Housing Resource Center; they are available to answer questions on any rental housing matter. They help mediate landlord/tenant conflicts and any problems that arise.
- 65% are unfamiliar with Inspectional Services Department; they make sure that every apartment is safe, habitable, and meets State sanitary standards. They also take care of rodent and bug infestations.
- 57% don't know the bank where their security deposit is being held; the location and bank information of your security deposit should have been given to you when you signed the lease.
- 53% don't know that the landlord is responsible to pay the Rental Inspection Fee; the apartment you move into should be inspected within 45 days of your move, and your landlord pays this fee. Your landlord can charge you for up to 50% of the inspection fee.
Boston Bikes

Boston BikesBiking in Boston during the spring is certainly enjoyable - you can save money while taking in a great view of the Charles River, and get some exercise! However, most people are unaware that when you bike, you are considered a vehicle and you must follow signals as if you were operating a car. Look for designated Bike Lanes so you aren't biking in and around cars.
Check out the Boston Bike Map, designed specifically for cyclists to enjoy Boston to the fullest! Download the PDF or stop by our office for a copy.
Conserve Energy, Save your Summer Wallet!

Tight on money, but still want to stay cool this summer? Here are some tips to conserve energy and money!

1. Use a fan instead of air conditioning on the days and nights Light Bulbthat are not real hot.
2. If you do use an air conditioner in one room, close the door. This will help keep the cool air in one room and use less energy.
3. Don't put the temperature on your AC so low that you're freezing. Adjust it so that you are comfortable, which will save a lot of energy.
4. Close your shades or drapes - this will stop sunlight from coming into the rooms of your apartment and keep you cooler.
5. Turn off and unplug appliances, computers, TVs, lamps, or any electronics when you aren't using them. Even when they are plugged in, they consume energy.
6. Switch your light bulbs to Energy Star light bulbs. They last much longer, and use a lot less energy!
7. During the summer months, rely more on natural light. You'll reduce your electricity and keep your apartment cooler.

3. The historic Freedom Trail is free to follow along as you wander the history of the city, and includes free-of-charge, the USS Constitution, the Old North Church, and the Bunker Hill Memorial.
4. If you are looking for an indoor activity, all NU students can go to the Museum of Fine Arts for free!
5. If you're a music junkie, check out the free concert series Charles Riverall summer through September at the Esplanade at the Hatchshell, along the Charles River.
6. Spend a day in the sun! Head to Revere Beach by jumping onto the blue line on the T.

Did You Know?

RoomiesSelecting a roommate is much more than just living with someone who will split your rent. Signing a lease with other roommates means each tenant is signing a rent responsibility clause, making each tenant "jointly and severally liable" for rent. This means that if a  roommate fails to pay their share of the rent, the remaining roommates are responsible for the entire payment. Think clearly before you decide who to live with!
