Make a difference and be counted in 2010. Complete and return your 2010 Census form, mailed to your off-campus address. By participating in the census, you can help create a better future for you and those important to you. The 2010 Census will be a snapshot of our nation's population - capturing our changing and diverse America in a fleeting moment in time. But this historic event will tell us more than who we are today. It will affect your community's future, your country's future, and YOUR future. Find out more HERE. |

Dear Roaming Husky

"My landlord is angry with me because I complained to ISD about the unsanitary condition of my apartment. I've had bugs and mice for a long time. Now she is trying to evict me. Can she do that?"
- Righteous Husky
Dear Righteous,
By law, there is a presumption of retaliation if the landlord tries to evict you within six months of a complaint. The landlord must keep your apartment free of bugs, rodents, and meet all other health and safety code requirements. If she is trying to evict you, call the Rental Housing Resource Center for help at 617-635-7368.
Good luck,
Your Roaming Husky | |

A landlord has the right to refuse to rent to a prospective tenant based on poor credit history or insufficient income to reasonably cover the cost of the rent. However, it is illegal for the landlord to refuse to rent based on discrimination (ie. physical or mentally disabled, race, gender, religion, color, age (except minors), sex, or national origin). |

Too Good To Be True - Watch out for internet scams!
If you're an off-campus student looking for a place to live, we want to warn you about internet apartment rental scams. While they are not common, they do occur, and college students are definitely prime targets. Here are some tips so you can avoid becoming the victim of a scam:
1. Use Northeastern's Online Apartment Search to assure you are dealing with a reputable agency. Click HERE.
2. If you go elsewhere, do a Google search on that individual/company. Occasionally, search results about apparent apartment scams show up, and could mean that this person has tried to scam people before. Cease contact completely.
3. If you aren't asked for an application or permission to check your credit, this is a major red flag.
4. DO NOT send money through money wire transfer services such as Western Union.
5. DO NOT rent an apartment sight unseen - anyone can post pretty pictures on a website.
6. Keep in mind that on Craigslist, anyone can post anything. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!
7. Make sure that the person/agency you are dealing with has a physical office location and that they're not just operating electronically, so if you to track them down, you know where to go! |
SAFENet Advisory:
Spring Break Safety & Security
It's Spring Break and time to put school work aside for some relaxation, vacation, or community work. It's not time to put aside concerns for your personal safety.
PERSONAL SAFETY: Crime can, and does occur at any time of day or night. Please review your own safety practices: travel in groups; stay in well-lit areas; be aware of your surroundings; don't flash large amounts of money; carry your wallet in your front pocket; carry your purse close to your body, keeping a firm grip on it; avoid fights and disturbances; avoid shortcuts through parks & alleys; trust your feelings. If on campus, use the Public Safety escort service when possible and contact police via cell phone, or use one of the many emergency phones if you feel that you are in danger.
APARTMENT SECURITY: Securing windows and doors will minimize the chance of a break-in and help protect your property from loss. Make sure your windows are locked, and put the riser restrictors in place. Make sure the door to your apartment is locked when you leave, and remind your roommates to do the same. Enjoy yourself on Spring Break, but be responsible for your own safety and security by using the same safety measures as if you were back on campus.
For more information, contact the University Police Crime Prevention Office at 617-373-2696. |
