"I signed a 12 month lease in September, and I recently accepted a coop position out of state. Can I break my lease?"
- Future D.C. Husky
Dear 'D.C',
If you break the lease, the landlord can hold you responsible for all unpaid rent under the lease and/or for the costs associated with finding a tenant to replace you. One option is to find someone to sublet your room with permission from your landlord. Post your listing HERE. It's free and effective!
best,
Your Roaming Husky

A Time for Giving!
Thanksgiving is a great time to show thanks and volunteer in your community. Choose a charity and help them serve their clients, or give in someone's name to make a fantastic present!
Only a few dollars or hours of your time can make all the difference in someone's life. Below are a few opportunities, but get creative! Encourage your roommate and friends to help out so that no one is alone or hungry this season. Staying in town? Reach out to those that can't spend Thanksgiving with their families, or don't have a roof over their heads. Help serve hot meals to Boston's homeless population, and give back to those in need. Check out these local soup kitchens:
You'd be surprised at how far a dollar can stretch, and non-profit organizations are pros! The Boston Rescue Mission, www.brm.org can provide an entire Thanksgiving meal for less than $2.00!
Northeastern is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Dinner for long-standing community members on campus from 11:30am to 1:30pm on Sunday, November 22. Help us welcome these neighbors and serve them a Thanksgiving meal. To sign up, or for more information, contact Leyna O'Neill, Government Relations and Community Affairs at 617.373.3168 or email l.oneill@neu.edu. Check out more community service options at Northeastern's Center of Community Service HERE. |

Prepare to Sublet! |
Going on Co-op out of state? Coming back to Boston from an international co-op? If your plans are heading you into (or out of) an off campus apartment, subletting may be the right option for you.
First, decide where you would like to live, your monthly budget, and exactly how long you will need housing. Doing research on what is available is essential. Look for local sublet listings on our off campus housing database HERE. When you are looking at sublets, find a place that you feel safe in and make sure that you can get along with potential roommates. Get an estimate of all the utility costs and whether they are included in the rent. Before you make a final decision about a sublet, make sure the Landlord is agreeable to a sublet arrangement, and ask to sign a sublet agreement.
If you plan to move out of your apartment and want to make your room available to sublet, post your listing on our housing service site for free HERE. Our site is only available to Northeastern students and faculty/staff.
For more info on posting your vacant room write us at offcampus@neu.edu or visit us in 226 Curry Student Center.

Public Safety Advisory
Police departments across the country are promoting awareness, providing information about available services, and educating the public about the terrible toll that domestic violence takes on both victims and our society.
If you, or someone you know, are in a situation which you feel is causing you harm, or could cause you harm, you have the right to protection under the law, as well as access to University programs and services to protect your rights. There are also community programs which offer assistance to abuse victims. The Northeastern University Police can assist in obtaining an Abuse Protection Order, commonly referred to as a Restraining Order, from the court, if requested by the victim.
The University has programs in place to assist victims of abuse and harassment including counseling services at University Health and Counseling, and the We Care program. Students, staff and faculty may also seek assistance at the Office of Affirmative Action and Diversity which has programs and policies in place to deal with matters involving harassment.
