"I am planning to go on coop abroad in January, but I signed a 12 month lease that is valid until August 31st. What should I do?"
-International Husky
Dear International,
When a tenant is unable to live in their apartment for a full year, many choose to sublet. This means that someone else occupies your room for the time you are unable to live there, and is responsible for paying the rent. Get permission first from your landlord, then go to our on-line housing service site at www.offcampus.neu.edu and post a sublet listing. Once you find a subletor, make sure you all sign a new agreement with the landlord. Hurry, the time to make plans is now!
best,
Your Roaming Husky

Restaurant of the Month |
 |
|
Thaitation Located at 129 Jersey Street on the edge of Park Drive, this Thai style restaurant is well worth the price. The restaurant itself is adorable with an intimate, warm dining area. There is an extensive selection of classic Thai dishes to more western style barbeque entrees, prepared in any variety of spiciness. Milder dishes include numerous types of pad Thai, including the ever popular chicken style. For a spicier dish, get the "Drunken Noodle", is spicy your eyes will water. Entrees range from $9 - 13, however the portion sizes are incredible and leftovers are a guarantee.

Security Deposits: Have you received yours?
If you recently completed a lease, your former landlord has 30 days AFTER the end of the tenancy to return your entire security deposit, plus interest (if the tenancy has been for a year). If any deductions are made, the Landlord must return the balance with a statement that includes an itemized listing of deductions with supporting documentation and receipts. A security deposit may only be used for three things:
- Repair of damages caused by the tenant (this does not include general wear and tear)
- Payment of the tenant's percentage of a property tax increase (provided that there was a tax escalator clause in the lease)
- Unpaid rent
Make sure you get yours! For more information visit:

Flu Season Is Here, Be Prepared!
University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) wants you to know about city and state public health reccomendations in regard to the H1N1 virus and seasonal influenza.
We understand that living off-campus is different than living in a residence hall on-campus. We ask that you and your roommates take some time to discuss the following if any of you experience flu like symptoms.
1) If possible, the person experiencing flu-like illness should leave the apartment to recuperate with family nearby. 2) Otherwise, try to have only one person help care for the ill roommate to limit contact. This person should remember to wash his/her hands with soap and water after all contact. 3) Be sure to have an ample supply of fluids and fever-reducing medications as well as a thermometer. 4) The person experiencing flu-like illness should remain separate from the common areas of the house. Keep the sickroom door closed. 5) Clean all high-touch surface areas in apartment including doorknobs, light switches, & appliances with soap and water or a multipurpose cleaner. 6) All roommates should monitor themselves for flu-like symptoms. We appreciate your support as we work to keep the NU community safe and healthy through the flu season. For more detailed information, when to see a clinician and info on vaccine clinics, check http://www.northeastern.edu/uhcs/wellness/Influenza.html. |

Winterize Your Apartment! |
The Fall has been warm so far, but we know Boston's cold temperatures will be arriving before we know it. Now is the time to "winterize" your off campus apartment. Doing so will not only conserve energy, but save you money and help you enjoy the cold winter months.
First things first; cover drafty windows with inside insulation, found at most home improvement stores. It will do wonders for your heating bill. Thicker winter curtains also help to keep winter cold at bay. Weather strips can be used on the outside of doors to seal up cracks from cold winter winds.
Also, rearrange furniture for the winter months by placing dressers and bookshelves on outside walls to increase insulation. Use caution when operating space heaters as they can be major fire hazards. Move beds away from windows, and use extra blankets instead of upping the thermostat.
Getting your apartment ready for winter can seem like a lot of work, but in the end it's worth the effort. Remember to contact your landlord if you notice any major issues with drafty windows or faulty heating systems. As always, be sure to contact your Community Ambassador or the Off Campus Student Services with any questions or more tips! |
