Dear Roaming Husky,

"I have just moved into my first off campus apartment, and while we were unpacking we noticed that there were no batteries in the smoke alarm. My Landlord told me that it was my responsibility to buy batteries for the alarm.  Is this true?"
     - Off Campus Newbie

Dear 'Newbie',
As a tenant you have the right to an apartment that is clean and safe, and that includes having fully operational fire alarms.  It is the landlord's responsibility to maintain both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the residence, which includes purchasing new batteries as needed.

  • 4 appples
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Boiling water, apple cider or apple juice

 Directions

  •  Preheat toaster oven to 350° F. Wash apples, and remove almost all of the core-leave about1/2 inch of apple at the bottom. Dig all remaining seeds out. Place apples in your toaster oven pan
  • Mix sugar, cinnamon, and nuts in a small bowl, and spoon into the holes in the apples. Top with a small dollop of butter.

  • Bake for about 30 mins (apples should be tender but not mushy).

Great with Vanilla Ice Cream!

CONSERVE WATER

  • When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing.
  • Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  •  Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
  • If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.
  • For cold drinks keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop gets used.
  • Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.
  • Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you'll save up to 150 gallons per month.

SAFEnet Advisory

The school year is starting and with the new year comes the annual rush to move in to your new "Home".  The Public Safety Division would like to take this opportunity to provide safety tips that can help protect you and your belongings both at home and while traveling to and from the campus.

STREET SMARTS FOR BOSTON AND CAMPUS:

ON CAMPUS:
1)      Familiarize yourself with the Personal Safety Escort Service: call 617-373-2121
2)      Be aware of the Emergency Assistance phones located throughout campus
3)      Program University Police numbers into your cell phone: 617-373-2121 for escorts; 617-373-3333 for police, fire and medical emergencies

 OFF CAMPUS:
1)      Keep apartment doors closed and secured at all times
2)      The front door should be equipped with a deadbolt, key lock and peephole
3)      Do you have a buzzer system? Does it work? Don't buzz in anyone you don't know
4)      Get out and meet your neighbors
5)      Install riser restrictors on your windows, especially on fire escapes and ground floors

ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
1)      Avoid showing or flashing money or jewelry
2)      Wait for trains and buses with other people, or by the booth
3)      Stay away from commotions or fights
4)      Be aware of pickpocketing, make sure your backpack is fully closed

GENERAL SAFETY TIPS:

1)      Trust your instincts. If it doesn't seem right, leave the area
2)      At night, stay in well lit areas
3)      Choose well traveled areas, avoid shortcuts and alleys
4)      There is safety in numbers, always walk with others
5)      Carry your purse close to your body. Carry a wallet in your front pants pocket
6)      Learn about your neighborhood: what stores are open late? Where is the police and fire station?

Message from O.P.E.N.

Office of Prevention & Education at Northeastern

Living off campus has its advantages, and whether this is your first time out of the residence hall or you're a seasoned off-campus pro, here's some information about alcohol and drugs.

First things first, keep yourself safe, while still having fun:
 Know what you're getting
                                 red cupA standard drink=
12 oz. beer (2nd from top line)
8 -10 oz. malt liquor (Smirnoff Ice, Colt 45, etc.)
4-5 oz. wine or champagne (2nd from bottom line)
1-1.5 oz. liquor (bottom line)

                                                   Stay in your green zone
   bac levels
·A Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) up to .05 allows for positive symptoms of alcohol-like a warm feeling, extra energy & 'good buzz'-without negative consequences like memory loss, vomiting, & hangovers!
·Calculate your BAC at
northeastern.edu/open/Green_Zone.html or download the BAC Calculator app for your iPhone at apple.com
·Many people think that more alcohol=better buzz, but this isn't true. After you pass a certain green zone, alcohol's depressant effects kick in & you're more likely to have those negative effects.

To help reduce negative effects of alcohol & save a bunch of money, try out the following:
         ·Eat before & while drinking
         ·Space your drinks over time
         ·Mix in non-alcoholic drinks
         ·Keep track of your drinks
·Avoid energy drinks as mixers, they make you feel less drunk thank you actually are and can prompt you to drink more.
Other ways to stay safe:
·Don't leave a drink & return to finish it
·Don't accept a drink without seeing it poured
·Avoid mixing alcohol & drugs (legal or not)
·Pick a designated driver or get a taxi # before you go out-text 'DRIVESAFE' to 44264 nationwide to get a local taxi number for FREE!
·Be aware that sex and alcohol may lead to unintended outcomes.

*Please note: O.P.E.N. is in no way encouraging or giving you permission to drink, especially if you're under 21 years old.  However, if you make the decision to drink, we want to provide you with as much information as possible so you can make informed and healthy decisions.
