Green Tips of the Month POWER DOWN |
 |
|
You use more power than you think!
Computer and phone chargers still pull a currency when not in use; unplug them!
Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs; they last 10 times as long and use 4 times less power.
Lose the electric AC. A fan does the job just as well and saves you a ton of money! |

Dear Roaming Husky.... |
 |
|
"I have been living off campus in the same apartment for 10 months. Last week my roommate informed me that she had found a replacement roommate and I had to find a new place to live. My name wasn't on the lease, do I have any rights?" - Worried
Dear 'Worried',
Without your name on the lease, you have no legal rights to the apartment. However, only the landlord can ask you to move out. Talk it over and see if you can work out an agreement among you. Next time - be sure to sign a lease!

SMART MOVER TIPS:
Are you Ready? |
As September 1st draws closer, keep these tips in mind!
- Plan Ahead! Reserve a moving truck or service now!
- Forward your info! Inform the post office, electric, and cable company, and anyone else that you are moving to a new location.
- Drop the excess baggage! Avoid moving things you don't really need. It's time consuming and physically demanding. If you don't use it now, you probably won't use it later. Donate old clothes & furniture to a charity.
- Be smart about your moving service! If you hire a moving company, make sure that service has a good reputation; experience will save you time and money.
- Get all the help you can! Recruit friends and family to make the process go by smoother and faster.
- Make a survival kit! Pack a small bag of essentials to keep with you, including tools, to make the transition and first night in your new home smoother.
MOVING DAY:
- Box it up! Have plenty of packing tape on hand to seal the boxes.
- Prioritize! Not everything you pack needs to be unpacked immediately. Use labels to designate the priority of different boxes, and mark what room they belong in to make unpacking more efficient.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE:
- Function First! Unpack large items first, then worry about the accessories.
- Get to know your neighborhood! Spend a few days exploring the area; locate the nearest supermarket, post office, bank, etc. Go to http://www.cityofboston.gov/calendar/
to learn about activities going on in your new neighborhood.
- Meet your neighbors! Introduce yourself and be a responsible resident.

SAFENet Advisory
THE BUGS ARE CRAWLING IN!
It's August, which means moving vans, boxes, and BED BUGS! Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed solely upon the blood of warm-blooded animals. Repeated exposure to bed bug bites can cause people to become sensitized to the saliva of these bugs; some resulting in a mild to intense allergic reactions.
Where do bed bugs live? They are most abundant in rooms where people sleep, and generally hide nearest the bed or other furniture used for sleeping. They can conceal themselves in cracks and crevices around the room and within furniture. Some of the most common sites for infestations are bed frames, mattresses, and box springs.
What are your rights and obligations? Landlords and property owners have specific legal obligations to provide safe and habitable accommodations for tenants. Certain infestations, including bed bugs, may constitute an unacceptable condition. Tenants have an obligation to cooperate with owners and landlords. This includes preparing the apartment so that the pest control operator can easily inspect the rooms and treat if necessary.
Other important safety information
Rental Inspections: Landlords are required to have rental units inspected within 45 days of new tenancy. Check to see if your unit has been inspected: http://www.cityofboston.gov/isd/housing/certunits.asp
Safety and Crime Prevention:For important off-campus safety tips check out: http://www.northeastern.edu/offcampus/movein/security.html
No More than Four: Boston Zoning Code states that no more than 4 unrelated undergraduate students may live together: http://www.cityofboston.gov/isd/housing/pdfs/Student%20Zoning%20Flyer.pdf |
