DON'T BE A FIFTH WHEEL!
"No More Than 4" Boston Zoning Code |
Last year Boston passed a local ordinance requiring that no more than four full-time undergraduate students may live in the same apartment. If you sign a lease for an apartment with four or more people besides yourself you could end up in a bad situation. When Boston Inspectional Services Department (ISD) learns that there are more then four undergrads living in the same unit (even if your landlord permitted this), the landlord will be forced to have the unit reduced to four occupants. If you are the one who is kicked out, and your name is on the lease, you could be legally responsible to still pay for the place you were just kicked out of. So PLEASE, don't be a "fifth wheel" and sign a lease with a landlord with more than four undergraduates. It's better to be safe than sorry! |

SAFEnet Advisory Before leaving for vacation, or even a long weekend remember to take simple security precautions to secure your apartment and your vehicle, and to review your own personal safety. The fact summer is here and you may be in "vacation mode" does not mean that safety and security concerns should be put aside. Crime never takes a vacation and thefts from apartments, vehicles and offices still happen, as do assaults and robberies. Valuables taken are often small and easily concealed in a backpack, raising little suspicion in an area such as Northeastern's neighborhood. While most thefts from apartments and offices take place in the daytime, it should be understood that crime can and does occur at any time. PERSONAL SAFETY Please review your safety practices: travel in groups; stay in well lit areas; be aware of your surroundings; don't flash large amounts of money; carry your wallet in a front pocket; carry a purse close to the body, keeping a firm grip on it; avoid fights and disturbances; avoid shortcuts such as through parks, alleys, etc.; trust your feelings. If you are traveling these same practices are valuable especially if you may be in an unfamiliar setting, or distracted by your surroundings CELEBRATE JULY 4TH SAFELY Summer means picnics, barbecues, parades and fireworks displays, especially around the 4th of July. Summer also means an increase in injuries from backyard grills, bonfires and fireworks. The National Safety Council advises that the best way to safely enjoy this 4th of July is to watch a public fireworks display conducted by professionals. (http://nsc.org/resources/factsheets/hl/firework_safety.aspx) Enjoy your summer, but please remember to use common sense and stay safe.
