OFF CAMPUS STUDENT BARBECUE A SUCCESS!!!

BBQ1
We had a lot of fun in the sun this past Saturday at our barbecue in the Fens.  The food was great, everyone had fun playing games, the water balloon toss was a hit, and people loved our off-campus t-shirts.  Luckily it was a beautiful day as well. We would like to thank Student Activities who made it possible to feature this event in the Summester program, and our Community Ambassadors who planned and organized the games. Disappointed you missed the barbecue? Stay tuned and sign up for future programs and events we're planning in the coming months!

SAFEnet Advisory: Craigslist

SAFEnet

Craigslist.com....along with being mentioned in a recent series of high profile and tragic crimes, the name also suggests an opportunity to acquire much needed or wanted computers, furniture, DVDs and other assorted items, or to dispose of them.  Craigslist has also become a site for those with a criminal mindset who offer jobs that don't exist, apartments that are unavailable, electronic items or cell phones that either don't exist or are stolen property.

The point to consider is how safe are you? How safe is your identity? How do you know you are dealing with a reputable seller? The answers to these questions may be as varied as the site itself. Many websites work with law enforcement while Craigslist cautions buyers with links to safety and security information pages including: Personal Safety Tips; Avoiding Scams and Fraud; Prohibited Items and Recall information.

Some simple safety and security tips from the NU Police Department, including some from Craigslist.com are listed below:

1.  Insist on meeting someone for the first time in a public place like a café, coffee shop, etc.
2.  Tell a friend or family member where you are going
3.  Take your cell phone with you
4.  Consider having a friend accompany you
5.  Trust your instincts
6.  Deal locally with people you can meet in person
7.  Never wire funds via Western Union, Money-gram or any other wire service
8.  Fake cashier checks and money orders are common. A bank will cash them, but ultimately you are  responsible for those funds when they turn out to be fake
9.  Never give out financial or personal information such as bank accounts, credit cards, Social Security Numbers, E-bay, or PayPal information
10.  Avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services, where a buyer sends money to a 3rd party, or company, to hold until the product is delivered and accepted by the buyer. The 3rd party is then to send the money to the seller.
11.  A buyer may "Overpay" and the seller is asked to forward the balance to another account.  The check used for this payment may be found to be fraudulent and the seller is responsible for the funds
12.  Only a scammer will "Guarantee" your transaction
13.  Beware of messages telling you that you've won a lottery. You can't win a lottery you didn't enter
14.  Never pay anything upfront
15.  If it seems too good to be true, IT PROBABLY IS!
