WATCH
OUT FOR INTERNET SCAMS!!!
Scams

Recently a number of Northeastern students have been "scammed" as they search for off-campus apartments via CraigsList. They were asked to send a Western Union check in order to receive a key to their new "apartment". After doing so, both their money & the alleged apartment "disappeared." The best way to avoid similar scams is to use reputable realtors. NEVER wire funds or give out personal and financial information (e.g., Social Security Number, bank account information) to anyone online, and demand to see any apartment before you rent it!

Fighting cancer is a team effort. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. By supporting our team, you will be a part of a life-changing event that celebrates the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and empowers all of us to fight back against a disease that takes too much.

The event is 12 hours long. We need to have at least one team member on the track each hour signifying that cancer never sleeps. You can show up any time that is convenient for you. There is a $10 participant fee that goes to the cause.

Boston Shines BOSTON SHINES 2009
Saturday, April 25

Boston Shines 2Boston Shines 365 is a city wide neighborhood cleanup and community service volunteer program that aims to clean up the city of Boston 365 days a year. Help your fellow neighbors clean up the neighborhoods in Boston.

Over 5000 people have participated in this city-wide cleanup in past years. Activities such as painting a community center, planting flowers, sweeping, raking, and picking up trash are just some of the fun ways you can get involved.  Come join the Northeastern Teams on Saturday, April 25 @ 9:00 AM.

Meet at The Fenway Center in the Fenway neighborhood, or
at Puddingstone Park in the Mission Hill neighborhood.

If you cannot attend on the 25th and want to help improve your neighborhood, there are many other ways to be involved. You can join or create your own Community Impact Project - this is a one-day service project that combines multiple types of service in multiple areas (such as the painting and beautification of a community center or school). You can also pair up with a school in the Boston area and work to organize a school clean-up. Lastly, you can adopt a service site or a block. When you adopt a service site, you develop a relationship with the site and create one or many projects throughout the year. If you chose to adopt a block, you clean one or multiple blocks through scheduled cleanups or sponsorships.

SAFEnet SAFEnet Advisory:

Warm weather is around the corner and it's time to review safety and security preparations for the months to come. Areas of concern are bicycle safety as well as the security for personal items.

Did you know?
ˇ The majority of bikes stolen on campus last year had been secured using a cable type lock only. The remainder had no locks of any kind to secure them.
ˇ The warm weather invites an increase in bicycling, but also contributes to an increase in bicycle theft, as well as, tires, seats and other accessories.

Important security tips:
ˇ Properly secure your bike with a U-type lock; add a cable to lock the front wheel to the frame lock.
ˇ Record your bike's serial number, description and cost
ˇ Register your bike with police or other service such as National Bike Registry, Juststolen.net, etc.
ˇ Engrave your bike (and parts) with a mark that is unique to you such as your driver's license number
. Contact NUPD at 617-373-2696 for assistance with engraving.
. Bicycle security is important, but so is your safety while riding. Pay attention to vehicular and pedestrian traffic and other hazards.

Safety Suggestions:
ˇ Always wear a helmet
ˇ Don't wear baggy clothing that can get caught up in gears and sprockets
ˇ Wear reflective clothing which makes you more visible in low light or night time conditions
ˇ Consider some type of glasses to keep your eyes protected
ˇ Consider wearing gloves to ensure a good grip on the bike
. Contact NUPD for information on bike safety and security as well as products and services by lock manufacturers and the National Bike Registry.

Public Transit Safety Awareness:
The MBTA has been receiving reports from commuters that they had their cell phones stolen while using MBTA transportation. Be aware of your surroundings when on trains and buses. Secure your cell phone in your bag or pocket. Be aware of your location on the bus or train, don't sit near the doors. Most theft of cell phones and handbags usually occur as the door of the train or bus opens.

Running
The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's most prestigious road racing events. This year's 113th marathon will be held on April 20th and begins at 9:22am. We recommend finding a spot along Boylston St. if you want a good spot to see the runners cross the finish line. If you are more interested in cheering on those that cannot see the finish line yet, walk down Mass Ave to Commonwealth Ave where you can motivate runners as they pass by; scream any names you can read on their shirts, arms, legs, or hats. Experience this great Boston tradition!

THINK GREEN!!!

A Message From Your Kenmore-Fens Community Ambassador:

recycling

Although it can be a little hectic with classes, finals and co-ops going on, it still is important to take time to think about the environment, and the mark you are leaving on it. With some small changes, a big impact can be made on how you are affecting the world around you.

Car emissions cause dangerous carbon to be released into the atmosphere.  Try to use public transportation or Zip car, or better yet, WALK! It's good for your health and the earth all in one! Switch to using a reusable water bottle instead of throwing out bottles everyday, and use reusable grocery bags to help reduce waste at landfills. Use environment safe cleaning supplies, which are better for you as well. Keep thermostats as low as comfortable, seal windows in the winter, turn lights off when not in use, unplug chargers and switch to energy efficient light bulbs. This saves the environment and your money at the same time! Finally, when in doubt, RECYCLE!

All these changes, simple and small, help to reduce your carbon footprint and create a better world for us all. E-mail your CA for more info, and remember THINK GREEN!

OFFICE OF THE MONTH:

SPIRITUAL LIFE CENTER

Sacred SpaceThe Spiritual Life Center is here to support the spiritual and religious well being of the community.  Whether you live on campus or off campus, Spiritual life offers many resources to students.  There is a friendly support staff of chaplains belonging to many different faiths available to answer questions and support your spirituality or religion.  The Sacred Space is a beautiful award-winning multi-faith space for worship, private contemplation, group meetings, and special events.  For off-campus students, the Spiritual Life website offers a list of facilities not connected to the university where students of different religions can worship.

The Sacred Space (seen to the right) is a beautiful facility, creating a very relaxing mood for anyone who enters. Even if you are not religious, the Sacred Space is a great place to just get away from a busy day, and have a chance to relax and reflect.  Whether religious or not, it's definitely worth checking out.
