Retail Savings! Some retail stores offer a discount for college students. Most stores that offer such a discount do not advertise it but grant the discount when they are asked. J.Crew and Eastern Mountain Sports both offer 15% off for college students who show a college ID. You have to ask about the discount at both places but it can be well worth it!

Apartment Hunting Tips From your Community Ambassadors: |
|
- Talk to your friends! Do they have a great landlord? Does that landlord have another property for lease? This is a great way to get a feel for the property and the landlord from a trusted source. You never know who is going to have a great opportunity, and the only way to find out is to ask! It may be the trick to find that great apartment!
- Sit down with your future roommates and figure out exactly what you want (more or less). The most important things to consider are: distance from campus, total cost, number of bedrooms, and extras (i.e. do you want laundry in the building? )
- If you like an apartment, try to get in touch with a current tenant. Find out things like how much they each pay monthly for utilities, if they have a rodent problem, and most importantly, DOES THE LANDLORD TAKE CARE OF APARTMENT ISSUES IN A TIMELY AND RESPECTFUL MANNER?
Check the Web for "no fee broker" listings. I personally like to look at pictures, so I make sure images are checked so I know what to expect before hand.

SAFEnet Advisory:
Internet Security and ID Theft
|

What do Nickolas Sarkozy, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Bill O'Reilly and President Obama have in common? They have all recently become victims of "Phishing" schemes, internet hijacking and in French President Sarkozy's case, the victim of a larceny scheme where his personal bank account was accessed and money taken. Miley Cyrus' YouTube account was hijacked and fraudulent information posted. The others had their Twitter or other online accounts accessed, passwords changed or fraudulent messages posted. The information posted or generated by these activities did not escape the attention of the media and, once the false nature of the incidents was established, called into question the security practices of not only the user's named, but the service providers as well. An 18 year old has taken responsibility for hacking the Twitter accounts by using a software program to access a Twitter staff member's account, thereby gaining access to an unspecified number of accounts. The fact that this could occur showed an apparent weakness in the online security procedures of the organization. Understandably, the online services are not very talkative about measures they're taking, or weaknesses identified. They prefer you to believe that all that can be done on their part is being done. If you have a Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or a similar account here are some common sense practices which will help you avoid financially costly and emotionally exhausting experiences:
· Use a good, strong password. Combinations of numbers and letters (Upper and lower case) are best. Don't use something easy to guess like a birthday, phone numbers or address. Change your password frequently, every two to three months is a good idea.
· Be careful when using your password accessible account. Is anyone able to see you enter the password? Did you write it down somewhere?
· If you follow links on the internet, be sure you know where you are going. In the Twitter incident the fraudulent address was noticeable by rolling the mouse over the link and seeing the real address at the lower left corner of the monitor.
· When you are done utilizing the site, be absolutely sure that you have logged out. The best way is to close the browser, especially when using a public computer.
· Don't throw away bills and statements that come from accounts that are accessible online. Bank and credit card statements have a tremendous amount of information that is potentially harmful in the wrong hands. Shred documents, statements and receipts. This makes it more difficult for those who would go through your trash to get information that they can use.
· Don't overlook those free credit card offers that show up in the mail. Even if you don't want to participate, just throwing the blank form away is dangerous to your bank accounts. You could end up buying a 60" plasma HDTV in Idaho and using "Your" new credit card for the down payment. Shred these forms, including the return envelopes with "Customer Tracking" barcodes, before you discard them. If you think that your accounts, or passwords have been compromised, NU IT Security offers these suggestions: · For NU systems such as MyNeu, Lotus notes, etc, contact the Help Desk at X-4357 (617-373-4357) for assistance in resetting the password or other help issues · For non-NU accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace contact that provider or organization directly for assistance · For an incident in which there has been a theft of money or identity fraud contact NUPD at X-2121 (617-373-2121) |

Valentines Tips From Your Community Ambassadors |
|
Mission Hill:
Mission Hill has an awesome array of restaurants perfect for any kind of Valentine's Day celebration. There are options for those looking for anything from a romantic dinner to a fun night with friends. Here's a few:
~Looking for a romantic night out? Head to the Savant Project, one of Mission Hill's newest restaurants. It's cozy and laid back inside, perfect to create that Valentine's Day feel. Check out their website: http://www.thesavantproject.com/pagina.html
~Want a more relaxed date vibe? Head to the Mission Bar and Grill, with its always-good playlist of music, great appetizers, and fun feel. To see their menu, go to: http://www.themissionbar.com/
~Want to rebel against Valentine's Day and have a night out with the friends? Penguin Pizza is a good choice, with their extensive beer and pizza menu and wide array of board games to take advantage of. Their website is: http://www.thepenguinpizza.com/
Fenway:
There are so many great things to do in Boston on or around Valentine's Day just in our neighborhood! Here's a few suggestions of how to plan your romantic evening:
~For romantics, V-day presents the perfect opportunity to be as corny and outright cheesy. Whether it be words spelled out in rose pedals or hidden gifts, it is the perfect reason to celebrate the people you surround yourself with. For a date with an extra-special person I would recommend visiting www.opentable.com and click on the valentines specials page. It lists restaurants with Pre-fixed menus so that you can know what dinner will be offered ahead of time. Bon appetit!
~The Boston Symphony Orchestra has Student tickets ($20) available for every performance, including their February 14th concert of Mozart selections. Go to their box office during regular hours and show them your Student ID to purchase.
~As already mentioned, check out fixed menus to get the best value at a romantic restaurant. But don't wait too long, make your dinner reservations early.
~Although on the pricey side, The Boston Rose Florist at 225 Mass Ave. is taking 20% off your bouquet if you order before February 12th.
~No one likes a box of chocolates that has a few unwanted pieces that just end up in the garbage. Bon Bon's at 197 Mass Ave. lets you pick your own assortment of homemade truffles (they have at least 50 different flavors), gourmet candies, and they even make giant peanut butter or oreo cups. Stop here to get your date (or yourself!) a personalized selection that you know will be enjoyed to the very last bite. If chocolate isn't your thing, Bon Bon's is also known for their gelato. You can mix up to three flavors in one cup, so ask for samples and choose wisely! If you're feeling a little lazy but want to round out the cute albeit quite cheesy gifts, you can buy a cuddly teddy bear to go along with the candy and flowers, but I warn you, they're very expensive.
~If you don't end up ordering dessert at dinner, round out the evening with a special surprise of homemade hot chocolate. Look online for a variety of recipes and choose whichever looks tasty and within your cooking skill range! |
