Moving Out Notes                              Beach

It's that time again: MOVE OUT TIME, and Off Campus Student Services wants to remind you of a few things:

Security Deposit
Don't forget your security deposit! The security deposit acts as protection for the landlord should the tenant cause damage to the property or leave owing rent. A security deposit may only be used for three things:

  1. Unpaid rent
  2. The repair of damages caused by the tenant (this does not include general wear and tear)
  3. The payment of the tenant's percentage of a property tax increase (provided that there was a tax escalator clause in the tenant's lease)

A landlord has until 30 days after the end of the tenancy to return the entire security deposit and its accrued interest. If any deductions are made, the landlord must return the balance along with a statement that includes an itemized listing of the deductions with supporting documentation and receipts. If the landlord does not return the security deposit within 30 days, the tenant should send a demand letter asking for immediate return of the amount in dispute.

Moving Vans
Also keep in mind that if you have a lot of stuff, you may want to consider a moving van to help move your things. If your apartment has a lot of heavy furniture that may be too big for a car to hold, a moving van is a nice, inexpensive way to cart your things over to the new apartment!

Featured Neighborhood of the Month: Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain, or "JP" as the locals call it, is a classic "streetcar suburb" that has evolved into one of Boston's most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods. The ethnically diverse area is home to many Latinos, young families, and a growing gay and lesbian community. Hyde and Jackson Squares have significant Spanish-speaking populations from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. This blend of cultures is reflected in local businesses, such as the many different restaurants which line Centre Street, one of its main thoroughfares. Residents and visitors enjoy walking, biking, and running along Jamaica Pond situated on the Riverway, part of Boston's Emerald Necklace.

Public Safety
Imagine: You have just returned to your office from a meeting and you find a person unknown to you behind a desk opening drawers, or imagine you are in your apartment building and see someone carrying a laptop or other valuable out of an apartment, but you don't know this person and they don't live there. You are in the library, or the Student Center and see someone pick up a bookbag or laptop that you know isn't theirs. You saw the owner put it down at the table. What do you do?

If you say "Call the police" that would be the correct thing to do. It doesn't always happen that way though. Delays in notifying the police mean less likelihood that a suspicious person may be stopped and if they had taken anything it will not be recovered. Too many times the University Police receive calls after the suspicious person has left the area. If these types of occurrences should happen to you, call the police at EXT-3333 (617-373-3333 from a cell phone) right away from a safe location. Provide a description of the person, where they were, what they were doing, and where they are now or in which direction they were last seen heading. Were they carrying anything (Backpack, carton, briefcase, etc.). If you had the opportunity to speak with them, did they have an accent, speech characteristic such as a lisp or stutter? What did they say?

Do not engage a suspicious person beyond what it takes to determine that you cannot assist them. Do not confront, argue or chase after them. The best course of action is to notify the University Police immediately and calmly provide a description and direction of travel, if you know it.
