Public Safety Division- SAFEnet Advisory
              Public Safety

 Did you know?
· Sixty-six percent of bikes stolen on campus last year had been secured using a cable or chain lock only. Fourteen percent had no locks of any kind to secure them. The others were easily defeated.
· The warm weather and improved conditions invite an increase in bicycling, whether to school, work or just for fun. These conditions also contribute to an increase in theft of not only bicycles, but parts such as the tires, seats and other accessories.

Important security tips:
· Properly secure your bike with a U-type lock at a minimum, add a cable to lock the front wheel to the frame lock.
· Record your bike's serial number, description and cost. Keep the information easily accessible
· Register your bike, or use another service such as National Bike Registry, Juststolen.net., etc. Engrave your bike (and parts) with a mark that is unique to you such as your driver's license number, i.e. S12346789/MA. This will help make it easier to report a stolen bike, or identify and return your bike should it be stolen.

Bicycle security is important, but so is your safety while riding. Bicyclists should pay attention to vehicular and pedestrian traffic and other hazards. While it is important to secure your bike it is just as important to pay attention to your safety as you ride.

Safety suggestions:
  · Always wear a helmet.
  · Wear clothing that is not baggy that can get caught up in gears.
  · Wear reflective clothing.
  · Consider some type of glasses to keep your eyes protected.
  · Consider wearing gloves to ensure a good grip on the bike.
