The Treacherous Waters of the Internet
Phishy Advice from Jerry Caruso

This month let's talk about Phishing. No, that is not a typo, and unfortunately this type of phishing is never out of season. Phishing is the practice of inducing someone to enter a website and open an attachment which contains a malicious code. As geeks would have it, the name implies the act of luring the unsuspecting in an effort to make a "catch." However, unlike the unfortunate former sea-dwellers, the "phished victim" is usually unaware that they have been duped. The results can be devastating to both computer and credit. Phishing victims turn over valuable information to the phishers directly by entering personal data onto a phishing website, or indirectly via keyloggers and other backdoor programs that copy information from computers and transmit this information to the perpetrators.

In the past, phishing lures were rather primitive and obvious. The emails came from people that you never heard of. The language was terse, the English, spelling and grammar were terrible. Modern day phishers have become quite sophisticated. They no longer use pigeon English, and because these lures have a method of self perpetration, they are often from people on your mailing list! However, one of the most disturbing trends is lures to fake websites that are nearly impossible to distinguish from genuine sites.

How do you avoid becoming a phishing victim?

If you are not expecting an email with an attachment from your friend then ignore it. If it is not from a friend, then delete it. Occasionally, thumb through your junk mail and look for similarly sounding emails. Many times just a few word changes will allow a lure to slip through when your filter has trapped similar emails. Emails from banks and other financial type sites such as eBay and PayPal should be examined closely. Emails from Microsoft, HP, and Dell claiming to have patches should also raise a red flag. It's not that these companies do not care to update you, but they would likely not reach out to you "personally." When you receive a suspect email, carefully "mouse-over" the link. If it is a phishing site you will see that it ends in something like "paypal.mysite.biz/login.html." It is the "mysite.biz" that provides the clue that this is a bad site, so don't bite.

If you suspect that you have been singled out for the next seafood special, forward the email to virus@networksplusco.com. We will examine it for you and decide if it is safe. If you feel that you have already been a victim, then contact us immediately.

Be very wary, the waters of
the internet are extremely treacherous. Let Networks Plus be your lighthouse on the web.

Experience the
Networks Plus difference.

       IMPROVING YOUR SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Advice from April Stavely

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the structuring of a website for maximum results from search engine q
christmasueries such as Google and Yahoo.

Building an attractive website is only half the battle in the w
ar for web presence. Once all the time, energy, and care have gone into building the site, your site should be optimized for maximum search capabilities. Every website that we build is put through a ten step process to improve SEO. Some of these steps can be incorporated into existing websites, as well. Our web designers understand what search engines look for and how they work. They keep themselves appraised of the latest tactics in improving SEO and they keep up with ever changing search engines.

Some of the steps your Networks Plus designers will take in order to improve your SEO are:

* Submit your site to Google Local, making it possible for your business to come up on a map when someone in your area is searching for the goods and services you provide
* Add your company name, address, and phone numbers to every page, making it easier for search engines to find you
* Examine all of your title pages and make sure that the wording used in your titles, headers, text and links optimizes the search engine's ability to find what you specialize in
* Submit your site to many free search directories, including specific directories in your niche
* Build a sitemap so that search engines can find every feature of your web site

This service is free to all of our customers for whom we  have built a website, and is available for a reasonable price for anyone who is interested. You can start improving your SEO on your own by removing words such as "welcome" or "home page" from your headers and links and replacing them with words that reflect what you do and what you want search engines to detect. You can also add your contact info to every page, as mentioned above. Stop feeling frustrated when your web site comes up on page 500 when you search Google, and start taking action to get yourself closer to the first page!

Spice Up Your Logo
Thanksgiving
Is your web site full of useful information, easy to navigate, and well laid out but you feel that it could use some sprucing up? Networks Plus offers seasonal touches for your website. Your logo would look festive with a wreath or a Santa hat, and your whole site could reflect the changing seasons with pumpkins, flowers,  holiday touches, or whatever you decide is appropriate for the time of year. Our web designers would be happy to build moving flash elements into the heading of your web site.

Having seasonal elements on your web site shows customers that your site is up to date. They will not need to worry that they have come upon an outdated site if there is a four leaf clover wishing them a Happy St. Patrick's Day in the middle of March. It also shows that you take pride in your site, and that you want to put a little smile on your customer's face.

Give Networks Plus a call if you would like to start discussing some ideas for keeping your web site current  and interesting through the use of seasonal  flash elements. We are interested in your ideas, and are also ready to offer you some of our own. Check out our homepage to see an example. Happy Holidays!

 Did You Know....
Helpful Tips from Greg Mullen

Ctrl + C =   copy
Ctrl + V =   paste
Ctrl + X =   cut

If you have several programs open on your computer, you can move through them by hitting Alt + Tab

If you have an optical mouse that it acting up, you may need to change your mouse pad. A flat black or a shiny  pad can confuse your optical mouse. Try placing your mouse on a plain sheet of white paper. If this fixes the problem, you should shop around for a new mouse pad. This time choose a light color pad so your mouse will not be confused.

Mind Teaser
Don't let your brain freeze up while you are sitting in front of the computer! See if you can solve this mind teaser. Look for the answer in December's Newsletter from Networks Plus.

Q:  It's been around for millions of years, but it's no more than a month old. What is it?

The answer to last month's mind teaser ( After teaching his class all about Roman Numerals the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete. How could the students do this? )  Answer: The students could draw an S in front of the IX, making the word SIX. Remember, the teacher never said the students had to draw a straight line!
