September 2008
Welcome to our third edition. Hopefully we have worked out all of the grammatical
and spelling kinks. Thanks to all of you who have pointed those out to us ;) We hope you will find this newsletter as informative
as you do entertaining, but if you don't, please opt out by clicking "unsubscribe" at the bottom of the page. We do not wish to be considered SPAM.
Please check out the article on data recovery by Greg. It should
provide some insight into our capabilities as well as food for thought should
you decide to donate your PC to charity. If you do not also wish to donate your QuickBooks checkbook, Excel spreadsheets and other personal
data, you would be wise to have Networks Plus wipe the disk clean. We perform this service as a courtesy to all of our customers and their employees. Beware of recycle centers that claim to clear the hard drive. The Networks Plus service wipes the disk to Department of Defense standards.
Experience... the Plus difference. -Jerry Caruso

Data Recovery
|
Greg Mullen
Technology evolves and changes so rapidly these days that it has become impossible to keep computers out of your life. Unfortunately, this also means that it has become virtually impossible to keep vital information off of your PCs as well. With PCs handling so much of your data, it is not hard to imagine the nightmare of having a PC crash and losing all of this important data.
We cannot fully stress the importance of good daily backups. Sadly, this is not always standard practice. Many of us take for granted the reliability of computers and don't give much thought to proper backups, leaving ourselves open to disaster. Networks Plus has recently dealt with quite a few of these situations... One recent incident involved a salon that had their PC restored to its original factory settings. This reset deleted all data in the process, including their customer database, which is vital to their business. Unfortunately, whatever backups they had were also on this PC and were also destroyed. The salon owner was afraid that all was permanently lost. But despite the fact that the restore process formatted the drive and removed all traces of any previous data, the techs here at Networks Plus were able to recover the entire database including customers, inventory, services, appointments, etc. Another such incident involved a customer's personal laptop that no longer had any trace of Windows ever having been present. Fortunately, we were able to recover all the data (pictures, music, emails, programs, etc.) for this customer, also.
These examples are not intended to undermine the importance of backups, but to illustrate the ability to recover data even when there are no indications of its existence. These illustrations carry with them two very important messages. First, there is always a chance that data can be recovered, no matter how grim the situation looks. Second, even if you think you have erased the data from your PC, it may still be possible for a Networks Plus tech to recover it.
While on the subject of deleted data, consider this: most of us simply throw out our old PCs after a few years, and pick up the latest and greatest model from Dell or Best Buy (or ask your friends at Networks Plus for a quote!). You may not give much thought to what is on your old PC. But perhaps you have used credit cards to shop online or pay bills. Your old PC most likely contains some kind of important information about you, and this information could be recovered by others when you throw your old PC to the curb. Simply erasing or formatting your old computer drives is not enough; these actions do not completely erase the information you value. To render any information on your old computer unrecoverable, you must use special software. Networks Plus can be of assistance to you with this.
So the next time you find yourself missing all of your data, whether it be customer databases or pictures, give your friends at Networks Plus a call - we may be able to find it. Also, the next time you buy a new PC and need to get rid of your old PC, give us a call so we can make sure your old data will never fall into the wrong hands.
