As August comes to a close, we seem to be finally experiencing summer weather! The shorter days remind us that fall is just around the corner and this is often the time when life changing events occur. In my case our daughter is off to university. We begin to visualize how to re-configure our household space and re-purpose the rooms to accommodate changing needs.
It's fun to think about re-inventing now but Thanksgiving and the 'big" holiday will soon be upon us. One result of this year's recessionary conditions is a redialling of spending habits and maybe a longstanding adoption of the mindset of earlier times 'what can we do without, where is real value'? There is a growing school of thought about the fallacy of buying lots of cheap "stuff". It's kind of like junk food - immediate gratification but no long term satisfaction, and the uncomfortable feeling of extra weight that makes our clothes and houses feel tight!
At Rousseau's, we've always held the belief that purchasing one good investment piece a season or year will in the long run give a much better result. Our upcoming Annual Fall Furniture Event affords that opportunity, and because we're still celebrating our 80th Anniversary this year, there will be some great specials and prizes to be had. Most of our top manufacturers are involved and are offering great values. Please watch for details on the Fall Sale in a week or two, along with information on some very interesting in-store seminars.
I'm off to the South of France next week with my Mom and sisters - please check on our adventures in September's Rousseau's Report! By the way, when my sister was in the South of France about 10 years ago, she discovered a very charming tiny mountainous village and noticed distinctive pottery birds clustered by the doorsteps of the houses. She eventually found the small family pottery and boutique where these have been made since 1974 and bought the first of what would become a collection. They're called 'Pintades' (guinea hens), and are quite chic in a rustic sort of way. They look a bit comical and make you smile because of the exaggerated ratio of head to body proportion; maybe the potter's visual pun - apparently they're not too smart! When I look at the pair on the mantel in our family room it always brings memories of France back and keeps me looking ahead to the next visit.
We will be purchasing them for friends, relatives, and customers, to ship sometime in October.
