| Greetings!
These are trying times and we cannot control what's happening with the economy. What we can control is our own environment. Because the world outside our front door feels so uncertain and unpredictable right now, it's more important than ever to transform our home into a comfortable and safe place; the sanctuary and haven that we deserve. Many of us are inspired to renovate, remodel, or redecorate; but with an eye to value employing our cautious Canadian mindset. Regardless of the current environment, we want to find ways to create stylish, timeless rooms to nurture our families, friends and ourselves without extravagance or waste. I believe that we are all now looking more to the long term. This month, Rousseau's Report is focusing on ways to improve our living space in the best possible way.

Rousseau's Trends (Each month we make you aware of trends and directions in the furniture and interior design industry)
Re-upholster Existing Furnishings
Whether a piece is a family heirloom or a second-hand store bargain, refinishing or repainting (if necessary) and then recovering with an unexpected fabric and trim can definitely breathe new life into an old piece and tweak the overall appearance and ambiance of a room, or repurpose a piece for a different room.
If I use myself as an example, I received a very formal high back Chippendale wing chair as a wedding present during my 'formal phase' and had it covered with an expensive wool damask . Now it lives in a tiny upstairs bedroom, slipcovered casually in off-white linen. The treatment and fabric allows the chair to look great in today's more relaxed styling, and allows me to happily reuse a great classic piece.
Our creative juices start to flow when viewing new fabric collections and then sharing them with our customers. Sometimes just a yard or two of a fabulous fabric, plus trim for detail (for example, a beautifully trimmed accent pillow on a plain sofa or on basic bedding) can become the favourite element in the room, and elevate the look of a room to something more distinctive and personal, while at the same time pulling everything together.
Window Treatment
Another hugely important element in decor is the window covering. But it can be one of the more intimidating areas, and as one friend puts it - the 'open-ended liability'. Demystifying the decorating process for our customers is something we have been working on diligently. One trend that we've embraced wholeheartedly in this area at Rousseau's is the move to simpler draperies and blinds . Long gone are the complicated swags, jabots and other heavy treatments of the past. Instead, we typically subscribe to the ideal of keeping it simple. Keeping it simple though, doesn't mean giving up on quality materials and craftsmanship. Practically speaking, this often translates to either straightforward hanging panels or Roman blinds, maybe embellished with an interesting trim. In all of the many decades we've designed and fabricated custom window coverings, never have we been as excited about the newest take on our 'Everyday' drapery program which features gorgeous silks, taffetas, linens and cotton draperies, lined and interlined. Please drop by to inspect our newest display - exceptional quality and great value.
