Dear Fertility Professional;

Fertility clinics throughout the United States have brought joy and fulfillment to numerous families because of the diligence of medical professionals to increase the success rate of Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

Most families are counseled at the outset of their IVF treatment about the potential for remaining embryos and the choices available for the disposition of those embryos.  However, the focus of couples at that point in time is 'having a baby', not 'what will we do with our remaining embryos'.  As a result, the number of embryos in storage continues to increase.

The goal of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Awareness Campaign is help these families think through the options available to them.  We hope to accomplish by:

1. Helping clinics inform and educate their patients.
2. Providing clinics with practical help and understanding of the latest FDA Rules and Regulations from professionals who clearly understand them.
3. Supplying the latest fertility clinic survey data completed on behalf of the Awareness Campaign by California State University - Fullerton.
3. Maintaining an Internet web site giving potential donor families comprehensive answers to their questions and access to medical, legal and adoption resources.

As a friendly introduction we would like to invite you to watch several new videos we have created to help your patients make choices regarding their frozen embryos.

Two-Year Survey of Fertility Clinics Completed
Cal State Fullerton Social Science Research Center

Surveys were distributed to more than 400 fertility clinics during 2005 and 2007.  The intent was to analyze changes over a period of time by completing the same survey in two separate years.

Several evaluation questions were asked of each group of baseline [2005] and followup [2007] ART clinics.  One hundred and eighty-two clinics completed the survey in both years providing a matched pair analysis.

  1) willingness to accept patients with embryos stored elsewhere
  2) attitudes towards embryo donation/ adoption among fertility center staff
  3) the prevalence
of prior and current embryo donation/ adoption programs
  4) the proportion of clinics referring patients
to outside organizations/ agencies
  5) awareness of these outside organizations/ agencies
  6) procedures
regarding the disposition of embryos
  7) trends in patient preference for the disposition of unused
embryos
  8) standard operating procedures regarding the provision of information to prepare patients to
make dispositions

In our next newsletter we will detail the results of the survey.
