Greetings!

United Way of East Central Iowa is trying to raise more than $10 million for the sixth year in a row.

The $10 million-plus helps around 100,000 people in our six-county region, which includes Linn, Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones and Washington counties, and helps us move toward our five goals that aim to improve the community.

"This is the first year that we are not announcing an exact dollar amount as a goal," says United Way CEO and President Lois Buntz. "We clearly can't help our community without raising millions of dollars. But instead of focusing on an exact dollar figure this year we want to focus on the impact. How many people can we help together? The more money we raise the more people we can help."

We believe that when we all work together and pool our resources we can do the most good in our community!

In addition, we will seek to recruit 25 new companies, and 3,500 new donors. Of course, we are trying to raise as much or more than last year's $10.58 million.

Our community partners and the thousands of families they serve depend on the generosity of the Eastern Iowa community. When there are people in need this community responds.

Until next month,

Education Volunteers Needed

We will hold a Volunteer Information Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 am on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Human Services Campus (317 7th Ave SE). Come and hear from Jon Bancks and  Jim Green who will tell us how volunteering impacts their lives and others.

Through the work with our community partners, we have identified 250 volunteer opportunities in areas related to supporting children and youth in east central Iowa through reading, tutoring and mentoring.

Join us on September 20 for a free breakfast and informal meeting that will feature representatives of several groups in need of volunteers.  Attendees will hear how they can help children in our area and learn about the opportunities that are available.

Space is limited for this event.  Please RSVP by September 18 by clicking here.

Eleven people found living on the street - an increase from previous counts

Staff from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, United Way and the Willis Dady Emergency Shelter, recently went out and counted the number of people living on the street in Cedar Rapids.

They found 11, which is a jump from previous counts of 2-3.

People falling on tough times, including due to the economy, could be factors.

In all in 2011 local programs served 5,802 homeless persons through various types of programs such as emergency shelters and transitional housing.
