Greetings!

 

Our 2011 Campaign has wrapped up and we will announce how much was raised at an event from 5-7 p.m. on Jan. 19.

 

Besides the announcement, we will see a five-minute play about United Way (produced by the Urban Theater Project of Iowa), live music featuring Danny Whitson, of Lonesome Road, experience stations that cover topics such as only having $4 per day for food. 

 

Of course, there will be even more.  (Appetizers are served.)

United Way - Helping Deliver Smiles One Meal At A Time

 

It's more than just a meal at Horizons Meals on Wheels, a United Way partner agency. Meals On Wheels helps older adults and persons with disabilities meet their daily nutritional needs.

 

Delivering hot, fresh restaurant-quality food 7 days a week. Staff and volunteers who make deliveries provide safety checks, as well as emotional and social support.

Immigrants Learn English at the Catherine McAuley Center - a United Way partner agency  


The Catherine McAuley Center, a United Way partner, has seen an increase in immigrants who need help with English-language skills.

United Way helps children who experience difficult situations

According to research conduced by Dr. Robert Anda on Adverse Childhood Experiences, there is a direct correlation between the traumas suffered in childhood with poor adult health status and disease.

United Way of East Central Iowa health expert, Eugenia Vavra, noted that teens and adults are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, have social and emotional impairments, and have health problems as a result of traumas and family dysfunction experienced in their youth.

Register now to attend the Jan. 16, 2012, Remembering Martin Luncheon in Cedar Rapids.

 

The event will recognize 22 student leaders who demonstrate Dr. King's honorable characteristics through their volunteer work, school attendance and positive behavior.

Learn about being a volunteer mentor  

 

United Way is partnering with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Children of Promise Mentoring Program to hold a mentoring information/recruitment event later this month and all are invited to learn more about mentoring.
